Quick bit of background: I go hillwalking and I've got a Garmin etrex GPS with data cable. I'm thinking about buying GPS/mapping software with at least 1:50,000 UK maps - So Anquet, Memory-Map and perhaps Fugawi are on my shortlist. I don't currently have a nice colour PDA, but would consider buying one in future.
In addition to the supplied OS and/or Harvey maps, I would want to be able to use my own maps (be they scanned images of paper maps, 1890 vintage OS maps from www.old-maps.co.uk etc).
I've tried and failed to download the Anquet demo on dialup, that will have to wait until next week at work. Also nothing on their website, or the June 2003 review suggest this is possible in Anquet.
So, can other maps not supplied by Anquet be used? Or would I need to a second program to do this? Thanks _________________ Peter |

I'm not hopefull given this statement (from this thread) by MikeB about Memory Map:
Quote: | Sorry Will the OS place a lot of seamingly stupid and officious limits on what you can and cant do with thier maps.
The three main ones are:
1. No scanning or calibration of any maps
2. No software application upgrades which add new features.
3. No download to PC of maps over 1600 Km2 |

Anquet - cannot use any other map and does not support self scanned maps.
Fugawi -you can scan in and calibrate maps using the PC version, then download these calibrated maps to your PDA
Memory Map Europe Edition users can scan and calibrate their own paper maps.
Memory-Map 2004 OS Editions do not support self-scanned maps.
OxiExplorer - You can scan in and calibrate maps using the PC version, then download these calibrated maps to your PDA _________________ Ian.

Thanks icsys
Can I assume that the Memory Map US Edition is like the Europe Edition, and that users can scan and calibrate their own paper maps?
My impression from reading other threads is that Fugawi also comes in an OS edition without map calibration, and in a non-OS edition that does. Their website isn't clear on this.
If thats all correct, then it does sounds like I would need one program for OS maps, and a second program for DIY maps, thanks to the OS's rules _________________ Peter |

The Memory Map US edition or more precicely non-uk software will allow you to calibrate and use self scanned maps. You will not be able to use Memry-Map UK maps with the application though. To do this you need to buy MM 2004 (with UK Maps) and have both applications installed on you pda.
Fugawi also do 2 versions an Ordnance Survey version and a Global version. The OS version does not allow calibration of maps. _________________ Mike Barrett |
