Just seen that in the other thread. I would be willing to bet all my Satmap gear that they don't have it in stock |

They certainly don't. From their web site:
..."available in either Black or Green." _________________ Paul |

Update from Satmap on the rubber case:-
Thank you for your email.
I am sorry I can’t give you a precise date at the moment as we have problems with the shipment of the product.
Please check our website for further information and product news.
Best regards,
Susanne

I think that it's current status is simply "nice idea". _________________ Paul |

A couple of weeks ago they told me "next month".
I am particularly keen to get one as the USB cover broke off again, first charge after they repaired it. Apparently it is a known problem with the latest batch of replacement covers and/or adhesive. They are compiling a list of people affected by this and will be in touch when they find a solution.
I was kind of hoping that they might give me a silicon case to overcome the issue, especially as I have been waiting 9 months! |

Is the screen area completely open or is there an additional sealed transparent cover bonded to the rubber case ?
If it's open I can see in terms of waterproofing this rubber case being worst than an unprotected Satmap. There is no way a fully waterproof seal will be achieved around the screen edges, allowing water to seep in and collect inside. A much worst situation than having water run off an uncased Satmap. |

I think it comes with a ZAGG screen protector which suggests that you use it without the outer screen and that the cover is "open".
As I presume no one has actally seen one we will have to wait and see.I just hope it will fit on a bike mount or I shall be sorely disappointed.
I am going to the Bike Show at Earls Court in a couple of weeks,I will try to get some further info on the case, they may have one there.
Will also ask about the expanded Route Planner which was promised at last years show for "just after Christmas".

Just got a Goggle alert taking me to this link:http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/gear-news/satmap-launches-waterproof-case/7440.html
On the other hand satmap told me today that it would be sometime before Christmas!!
No really good enough as the weatherproofing of of my Active10 is still compromised by the USB door coming of and Satmap having no solution to fix it yet. See above post.
I am in the Peaks in 3 weeks time! |

This is the review Andy was refering to.
This is the new 100% waterproof cover for the Satmap Active 10 GPS unit which is due to appear in the next few months and should make the the unit suitable for paddling and extreme wet weather use.
The samples we've seen are either olive green or black - no weird acid stuff that we know of - and price is, from memory somewhere around £20, though we'll check and amend if necessary. As it stands, the cover isn't compatible with Satmap's bike mount, though apparently one of the company's sponsored riders has simply cut a hole in the base and had no issues for wet weather cycling use.
Satmap has also recently released the Swiss Singletrail Map which covers the whole of Switzerland at 1:50k and 1:250k scale with an overlay showing cycle trails which are graded according to difficulty.
I hope the price is right,I thought it was about £40.
For us bikies it looks like it is out with the knife, not really good enough in my opinion, especially after such a long wait and it still says "in the next few months"!!
Doubtless we will buy it and in six months time there will be a "Bike Version".

Email from Satmap today..............
Thank you for your email.
The shipment of the ProSHIELD rubber case has arrived and we are getting them into the shops now.
It will be available to buy online in a few weeks.
Unfortunately, you can’t use it with the bike mount unless you cut it in the back to fit. But this probably doesn’t make it waterproof anymore.
We will announce it as soon as it is available to buy online.
Best regards,
Really disappointed reference bike option ! |

At the Cycle Show I was told that this weatherproof case "arrived today". I asked if it further reduced the screen legibility much and was assured it doesn't, but I find that hard to believe.
Again, they've not really thought it through I think, as my understanding is that they first thought about this in the context of canoeists rather than cyclists and haven't bothered making it bike mount compatible.
In my view this is further evidence that they see the A10 as a device for walkers, etc., i.e. as a handheld, and just tag the "cycle use" on as an afterthought to pick up a few extra sales.
Just another reason to jump ship back to Garmin, now that several Garmin models are available with full GB OS 1:50,000 mapping, at a comparable cost.
Not to mention the MemoryMap Adventurer 3500, just announced today - ? |

As far as legibility is concerned I don't believe it will make a great deal of difference.I think the rubber case comes with a Zagg screen protector so I imagine the outer screen is removed, the Zagg is applied then the case fitted,so you will only be looking at the screen through the Zagg via the aperature in the case.
The case I believe is a spin off from the military Satmap application and I don't imagine the army has much use for a bike fixture but I think there is little excuse for redesigning it to accommodate the bike mount, after all it has been a very long time in coming.
I tend to think that there will be a "Cycle Version" eventually at the cost of another £40 or so.
