I have now had the opportunity to evaluate the new Tom Tom 1000 and here are a few initial observations.
Firstly the looks and feels good. Slim and good looking with the glass screen and brushed back panel. But I won’t dwell on this as most will have seen many pictures of the new unit.
Connection to the new “My Tom Tom” is proving to be troublesome, with the unit itself showing a connection to a computer but the web site showing “unit not connected”. Having queried this with the Company I understand they are having troubles with the new “Home” and that my unit was actually connected although the message showed otherwise. As you know there is very little functionality on My Tom Tom at the moment but I understand this is being addressed. I am somewhat amazed that this was left this late in the day to at least complete it to a stage of being able to log in !
I personally think the new revised menu system is excellent. Relevant icons dependant on the action you are taking makes trawling through pages of menu a thing of the past, and the “make your own menu function gives you the opportunity to have your own shortcuts on the main map screen.
I like the new touch screen, far more responsive than the old units, especially for entering numbers. You can “over tap” or “double tap” and move through menus by mistake but you do get used to the responsiveness. A slider lets you zoon in when in GPS map view, but when just viewing the map you can zoom using finger movements as an I Phone.
Some good news. Reflection. With the unit off you think you’re going to be in trouble with a mirror like image facing you, but turn the unit on and the screen is bright and clear. Yes there is still some reflection, but the brightness of the screen seems to overcome this. I tested it in bright sunshine, had to move the unit slightly from front on, but from then on had no problem at all. Actually I would say it is better on visibility in sunshine than the old unit with the mat screen. (Now it may be the rake of the windscreen, or may be autumn sun, but so far so good as far as I am concerned)
I love the mount, no more sliding or fiddling around to get a fix. Straight on click ! And of course off again. The connector is held in to the unit magnetically and again fits quickly and securely. I don’t understand why Tom Tom have not stuck with a USB, Mini USB combination, utilising their own connector on the unit end (does mean taking the cable with you to charge at home) but may be they have future technical reasons for this.
Live services and traffic have worked well, but as this is my first unit with this facility I can’t compare the response with other units. However it seems pretty quick to load etc.
I don’t think the route planning is particularly quicker than my last unit, but it is perfectly OK. GPS signals do however seem quicker to get a fix.
I know some will hate the lack of User POI’s, inability to see the unit’s content on the PC and the lack of Itinerary Planning. My Tom Tom has a long way to go to get to the Home level of functionality. But on the whole if you want a good looking unit which is intuitive in its menu structure with far less clutter and does what it says on the box i.e. gets you from A-B avoiding traffic problems give it a go.

Hi mow
Thanks for an interesting report.
However, as Tomtom have abandoned custom POI and the Itinerary function I will stay with my 720. When ever Tomtom add something new they also delete other functions that we users use frequently. Why this should be baffles me. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Except in this case, (apart from tarting up the menu a bit), they haven't added anything new... |

that's because when you arrive at one of the built in POIs the actual place you are wanting is not on your left or your right, but on the other side of the housing estate :D

But I already get that on my 940 and 950, AND on those models the red route 'stripe' ends with an arrow pointing to the correct side of the road too.
They broke that on the new 1000 and now the destination icon just appears in the middle of the road. |

They haven’t added anything new it appears (although my 720 didn’t automatically update time but I guess it did on later models)
It’s just an updated design with a better de-cluttered, intuitive menu system. As an example to clear a route is now two taps as opposed to four. Screen clarity is much better that previous versions and that’s a big plus. To me the new mount takes out a load of frustration, I’ve spent ages trying to locate my 720 in the socket !
I would guess (hope) the platform is ready for future developments.
If you are happy with your existing unit stick with it, but if you are in for your first GPS this new design with HD traffic will appeal to many. |

thanks for the report
just reminds me not to buy 1 yet as it seems to be still in the trial stages ...
Our company has done the exact same thing and is alienating some of our best customers
Looks like I will have to do the usual and skip a generation or at least till next apr/may when my free traffic runs out _________________ TomTom 5001 |

Does anyone know where I can get a GO 1000 additional mount kit please ? I just cant find one in stock anywhere ?
Im happy with my 1000 for the time being, but its an older map being the 850 ones, and you cant even update that yet, just one thing remember we have the map guarantee, and keep your receipt as if you have your unit over 30 days the tomtom home 3 might say you are out of the 30 days for installing the newest maps. |

Having spoken to Tom Tom Support today, they tell me that all 1000 units have been despatched with the latest maps etc.
Do you know different ? |

My 520 automatically adjusts the time but only after you set the time initially. My 540 is the same. _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101

As TT don't have them in stock yet on their own website, I would guess they haven't actually delivered any to resellers (or even produced any yet).... |

Good review Mow. Did the unit work straight out of the box without connecting to a PC or doing any registration? Eg the HD Traffic. |

Yes, well I think so !
Settings - My Tom Tom Account - then you get asked if you have a My Tom Tom Account - if yes - you log on using the unit - it then connects - and the message back reads "Your user name and password for Tom Tom PLUS are accepted. From then on all worked.
Now the reason I say think so, is that I had opened a My Tom Tom Account prior to receiving the unit. I also had to change my current 720 associated with this account to the new 1000 via a Support call. |

Good idea, I've just created a new 'My TomTom Account'. So hopefully I should just be able to turn on and drive. I'm picking the unit up en-route from Aldershot to Sheffield and want the traffic to work, what with it being a Friday. |
