|
|
I plugged my Go 530 in a few days ago to give it a good charge and it asked to update I naturally clicked ok.
I created a backup when I first bought the device but I'm sure this was on a hard drive that literally went up in flames.
As it was bought a little over a year ago and I aren't in the habit of reading up on every feature I didnt backup again. After the update the device has stated for a few days No Maps Found. I tried a few thing like backing up formatting and copying back but I think the map data is corrupt at this point. I contacted Tomtom but all they advised was the map is tied tot he device and she cant restore from there but to call them at which point I think they will probably try and sell me anoother map. I must admit im a little surprised a backup isnt automatically created if its thats critical. I own a program which can recover data from a harddrive and deep scans but unlike a HDD it only loads the last modified files in the map folder. Is there any way i can get the map folder for this or is there any recovery programs that will allow me to recover deleted files?
Thanks |

First of all, when you look at the contents of the unit using Explorer, do you see a specific map folder among the other folders? And, if so, are there a variety of files in it?
Have you tried a pin reset on the unit?
Is the (lost) map the original that first cam eith the unit or an updated one? If updated, you should find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\
If it's there then you can restore it.
Further, when you connect to Home--Manage my Device/Device/Does it show any maps? And, when you select the Computer tab, does it show maps there? _________________ David |

Hi There is a UK... etc folder with Cline Cnode etc files in it
Pin reset accomplished nothing when i tried other than restarting
The device came with 3 months free updates when i bought it so I would guess its an updated map but when the HDD set fire I had to reinstall, Although the damaged drive wasnt the system it did have a lot of lost links forcing the install. I can try using my recovery program on that location but dont hold out much hope.
When I connect it Home says no maps found but then I have managed to get a screen with the Map choice and an error saying the maps not compatible. I presume this is when I've tried downloading a copy in the hope it worked. I do still have the ordiginal folder that I copied out though before putting the downloaded folder in |

You could try making an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. Then delete all the loose files, from the root of the unit, NO folders or their contents.
Connect to Home and install the application that will be offered. See if that helps. _________________ David |

Hi Thats how I made my backup. Completely empty and then plug back in and update. Then copy the map folder over again. Still no Joy. Tomtom emailed and said -
"The phone support has the required tools to reassign the pre installed map on your device and also would help you with the details of it.
They are the expert team, who have the rights to look into the matter of pre-installed map on the device."
How accurate is this? Can they reassign?
Is it not daft that they don't give you a disk with the sold maps on? or have it hard programmed to do a backup everytime |

CS can indeed add maps to your account for downloading. _________________ David |

That would be commercial suicide as the maps would be pirated in minutes.
This way, a security key is generated as the maps are being downloaded, which unlocks the maps for your device only. |

Are they likely to do it?
From what their email support said the maps are linked to the device similar to Windows being hardware coded.
If norton can link there software to an online database which shows what product you own I see no reason why tomtom couldnt. If this is the case its as safe as anything else unless you go looking in illegal places.
But if the maps on disk is impossible and Cust service can reenable the original map. Then they could just make it account specific ie My account will allow me to download my map to my original device
Anyhow thanks for the help |
