They have already done this with the Start and the XL IQ-2.

How many people bought a non-LIVE model on the promise that an adaptor would be released to allow those models to use LIVE services, only to find that the adaptor had been canned and they'd have to buy a whole new satnav? ISTR there were a few complaints flying around at the time...
Wouldn't be surprised to find the 1000's 3rd party POI support ending up being a) late and b) a bit of a bodge that doesn't really work too well - but look! It's fixed on the new 1010, coming soon!
Or am I just Mister Cynical today? |
No I don't think your being cynical, realistic yes. I remember that time as well, I did not purchase on that basis, guess I will wait to see what the 1010 model is like. _________________ Sat Nav of choice WAZE

Are you sure about the Start, Mike? The reason I ask is that the North American equivalent to the Start, the EASE model did NOT get the application upgrade to allow for 3rd party poi files. _________________ David |

The similarity with the Start/ Ease, XL IQ-2 and the Go-1000 is the lack of support for third Party POI files when the devices launched.
Indeed the XL IQ-2 has had an update to enable the POI menu options unlike the Start/ Ease, whether this was due to poor sales figures or something else we will never know.
The big difference between the new kid on the block and installing third party POI files is the system used to deliver the files to the actual navigation device. Unless the new version of Home is modified to include such capability it simply isn't possible - Mike |

I haven't bought a PNA for a few years and am thinking of upgrading.
Which current models supports 3rd party POI? _________________ Mr.G

Most if not all Garmin models, TomTom's x50 range (550, 750, 950) and the XL range. _________________ Darren Griffin |

TomTom are clearly costing the no third party POI strategy against their own subscription database.
If they make more money selling their own product then third party POI support will stay withdrawn.
This may work short term for them as unsuspecting people buy their new product line but as people cotton on to the "closed shop" attitude fewer will buy TomTom devices so fewer will need TomTom's subscription service.
It would seem that they have given the money men until "sometime 2011" to make a decision on their final business strategy.
Personally I feel the lack of third party POI support can only harm the company in the long term.

It’s a scientific fact that globally IQ’s are falling
TomTom are masters at product marketing!
Obviously they’re adapting their products to keep inline with this change in human development.
Ugg….ugg….

One of the tenets of agile software development is dropping less important features to meet timescales if required. Of course another part of it is testing! _________________ J. |

Until it's proven that the new models have the facility for Joe Public to install custom POIs, I won't be upgrading my 550.
If anything does happen to it, then I will most certianly be purchasing another manufacturer's model.
This is a complete farce by TomTom. It's not just about speed cameras - what about all those other great POIs out there. _________________ Cheers,

Hear, hear....
I spend quite a bit of time travelling from the UK to Eastern & Central Europe and use heaps of POI proximity warnings for all sorts of things not just speed cameras.
For example....
Slovakia:
Speed breakers
Dangerous turns
Road congestion
Dangerous railway crossings
Dangerous roads
Poland:
Dangerous railway crossings
Potholes
Road congestion
Accident black spots
Dangerous sections
All make for a safer travelling and less chance of a buckled wheel rim _________________ 🔸🔸 Currently using TomTom GO 940 & Locus Map 🔸🔸 |

I've been in software development for over 20 years, and whilst I hate the idea of no custom POI's (due to this I will not purchase a new Tom Tom by the way), I have a lot of sympathy for what the CTO says.
Its not just a case of a developer quickly developing something, the whole process of design/developing/testing/documenting/translation the PND itself, TomTom Home and Server tools that support all of this is a pretty large job.
Over the years the companies/teams I have worked in have had to leave functionality out because of time pressures or stuff just taking longer than expected, however what worries me is that in my experience, stuff that's left out rarely gets put back, lets hope for TT do what they say and put it back in. |

I was think more along the lines of POIs for stores like Asda, Tesco, B&Q and hotels like Premier Inn etc.
My TomTom 1000 (if I had one) would not be able to navigate to any of those. _________________ Cheers,
