This to me looks like a ploy by TomTom to test the market to see if they can force the sale of their POI apps at a price to consumers. The answer is not to buy the new TomTom devices until they are withdrawn and re-issued with support for third party POI apps.. I for one would not upgrade my existing units to systems that did not function as I wanted them to!

Humm....

Sounds like a false promise to boost potentially poor sales of the new devices due to this loss in functionality.
Why wouldn't they include full non-TomTom POI support until 2011?

Very fishy....

Most of us know that it's all down to TomTom locking the OS from user access, and to install user POI databases we’ll need access to the TomTom file system.

Or perhaps because of the following….

In 2009 TomTom had to settle a patent protection dispute with Microsoft for infringing file-management patents.

I quote “As part of the agreement, TomTom will "remove from its products the functionality related to two file management systems patents" over the next two years.”

What a coincidence that’s 2011!

Humm…. from 2011 a change in the file system on their devices will be required…. user access may be available again…. full 3rd party POI support again….

Read all about it here:

The two years was the time frame to stop using the file system or pay a royalty to MS, it certainly does not mean that after the two year period has lapsed they can start to re-use the old file system again.

With a closed system that communicates with the device using a PC/ Mac application its going to be interesting to see how their new Home version can use file names in the usual POI format and stay away from breaching the Patent laws again - Mike

My point being....

Perhaps this could be the reason behind the TomTom file system change or at least the catalyst.

Does anyone know the format of the new filing system?
Does it include a complete removal of the patents Microsoft were complaining about?

Hence the possiblity of file access returning in 2011?

Actually, that's probably the one thing you CAN believe.

TT would not be the first company where the engineers/developers have been crying out for more time, but the money men and marketeers have forced an early launch date of a product.

(My bold). Not likely! You surely don't believe this thing was built from the bottom up?

Whoa, hold on. My comments were about that first specific quote and then about CHANGING things to put the functionality back

I've no doubt at all that they left out POI functionality deliberately and thought they could get away with it.

But I've also no doubt that:
1. the device will be released before the technical people are entirely happy with it, and
2. getting a third-party POI upload/download system up and running with the new Home (with all the neccessary security if you DON'T want to share your files with everyone else) is NOT going to happen overnight. It'd going to take a lot of work, and they don't seem to have the manpower for it.

To be fair, I have no reason to doubt this wasn't an honest error.

Those of us involved in testing have been privvy to the issues with the new platform and so it's not hard to see how planned timescales have slipped and in order to meet a deadline, features have been pulled.

Indeed the new platform forgoes mass storage for something entirely different.

Is it a coincidence that the change comes about following that case? probably not. But it might actually be a massive improvement for the support and delivery of updates. I have been told more about this than I can say, suffice to say that, where you aware of what is possible, you'd understand why they have gone for this system.

It is also far better protected than the mass storage setup, with with trusted data etc so it may help reduce the widespread piracy.

None of this excuses the omission of course, the lack of support for what TT term 'untrusted data' is regrettable and may affect sales sufficiently for even TomTom to re-assess it's value.

I feel a PGPSW campaign coming on Twisted Evil

My GO920 battery has now died. T haev already replaced it once and I do not expect it to be fixed again, so I would like to replace with a new model.

Just contacted TT custoemr support to advise them that because of a lack of 3rd party POI support I will be taking my business elsewhere. Probably worthless but it made me feel better Laughing

Why not DIY repair the 920 by putting a new battery in it, there are guides on this forum on how to change it if you need to see how - Mike

I certainly won't buy until TP POI support is available. Even then, I'll want to be confident that support will be maintained. No, come to think of it, there have been too many disappointments from TT in the past, so I'll buy from the competition, rather than wait.

Please do vote in our Poll on the issue of POI support here.

It's helpful to be able to gauge the opinions of all of you in this respect so that a group of us community sites can collate the results and see if this really is a big issue or not for buyers.

The battery on my Go 300 died after six years. I was going to get a 'new improved model', but having read all the adverse reports about the reliability of the new models, and the lack of support for POIs, I sent my Go for a battery replacement. Great - a third of the cost of a new machine with more features. Well done Tom Tom - another customer lost.

Sadly I appear to be even more cynical than the rest of you. If you want to test how important 3rd party POIs are verses the extra income from selling your own POIs then launch a product with no third party support. If it has a major impact then release an upgrade or is this cynicism taken too far? - Alan Rolling Eyes

Having been in electronic design and development I can say from experience that any future product is fully specified before anyone starts work on it. Either 3rd party POI's were in or out at the beginning. It seem that they were out in this case. So we seem to be given yet more bull from TT. (No change there). What an arrogant company they are / have become. Vote with you feet, buy from .......... anywhere but TT.

As I have said, it seems clear that they were 'IN' at the outset but were dropped from plans owing to difficulties with the testing and delays in getting this new platform architecture and update mechanism working.
