HTC Desire HD and Desire Z Android smartphones unveiled

At a launch event in London today, HTC unveiled the new HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z Android-based smartphones.

The new phones come with an updated HTC Sense which incorporates a camera experience and e-reading coupled with an e-book store.

HTC Desire HD
The HTC Desire HD specification includes a 4.3" LCD display and Dolby/SRS sound powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm 8255 Snapdragon processor. 720p HD video recording, an 8-megapixel camera with dual flash and a body hewn from solid aluminium completes the impressive feature list.

HTC Desire Z
With a unique new hinge that pops up to reveal a hidden QWERTY keyboard, the HTC Desire Z will prove popular with those who prefer a real keyboard. Again, 720p HD video recording and a 5-megapixel camera with flash take care of the photographic side. The HTC Desire Z is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm 7230 processor.

Both new smartphones will be available through mobile operators across Europe/Asia from October 2010 with the HTC Desire Z available in North America later this year.

I have the 'standard' Desire - it's a great phone.

There will always be a trade-off between size/bulk, portability and resolution but to be honest, to my ageing eyes the resolution on the standard Desire is plenty, and HTC Sense makes it simple and intuitive to zoom in on maps, web pages, etc when necessary.

I know some will want to use their phone as a Satnav but I much prefer the features on my Tomtom for that. I can't see me ditching my satnav anytime soon.

I also have the HTC Desire. When you update to Android 2.2 (Froyo) you automatically get the HD movie facility so it just looks like a rebadging exercise now the new phone is equipped with A 2.2 :-)

Yet again HTC have missed an opportunity to put a decent sized battery in one of their phones. I have an HD2, which has the same 1230mAh battery, and similar ridiculously good apparent times for the device as a phone. BUT IT IS MORE THAN THAT. if I switch on the GPS it runs down faster. Using the camera runs it down faster, reading a book or playing a game runs it down faster. If I use it for routing, it runs down faster. It would not save a full walk's GPS data even with the screen off. It died 5 miles in.

Typical battery life for my HD2 is a day and a bit, but only two or three hours if in use constantly.

Shame.

Comes with a new back cos its BIGGER

Another thumbs up for the standard Desire, a few people i know have one and all say its the best phone they have owned. Would have thought upgrading the screen would reduce the battery time, one of the only downsides of smartphones generally. As for the keyboard, i guess if you do lots of keyboard work on the move its worth having..
