|
|
I currently have the latest Northern Europe zone installed on my 740. I've inserted a 2GB micro SD card I had into the 740, and I'm in the process of downloading Eastern Europe for a trip to Corfu next week. I won't have a Laptop with me. I chose the SD card for installations at the start of Home, but the downloading page is saying it's going to install to internal memory. is this correct? I want to be able to switch to the Eastern Zone map when I get to Corfu, but I need my current zone until the night before. Is there anything I should have done before starting the download.
Also, if I get a 4GB card, can I install a complete HiRes W&CE map?
Many thanks in advance
ps I've got a backup
pps i haven't updated my profile _________________ Go740L App 9.510 Europe 985.8155

Home can't be trusted to put anything where you ask it to!
First problem is easy (ish!).
Backup first using Windows Explorer (see our FAQs), so all current mapping is safe. That's VITAL.
*If* Home then installs the Eastern zone map to the internal memory as well (i.e. if it has got room) either leave it there or manually cut and paste the whole map folder onto the SD card, again using Explorer.
If it complains it hasn't got room and says you need to delete the old map zone, let it, and just move the new one onto the card yourself and replace the old one from your backup (again with Explorer).
But I suspect it is just telling lies about where it is going to put the map... When I updated my XL recently, Home said it was installing to the SD card, but an XL doesn't even have a card slot!
------
If you want to be able to download the complete map, the instructions have already been posted on here, so have a search for those.
But in brief, you have to install your OLD complete Western Europe map to the SD card, then Home should recognise it and offer you the complete non-zoned version of the new map. |

Many thanks for the prompt reply Andy. I've got an explorer backup, so I'll just wait and see where the new one goes. If I end up with one zone on internal and one on Sd, do happen to know if I can swop maps without a PC?

not sure of the buttons on your 740 but you should have a button in the menu for change maps. that should then give you the option to change maps to the one on the card. |

Yup, it's in Change Preferences/ Switch maps / Switch map on my 940 running v9.
The menu names sometimes change, but it's always somewhere similar.
All recent TomToms can find maps on both the internal memory and SD card without any problems. |

If you have the whole W&C Europe map on your SD card, you will not need to swap maps, just use the whole W&C Map. _________________ Drivelux |

Thanks for your replys. Spoke to TomTom, bottom line there doesn't seem to be a way to download direct to card, recommended copy to card via explorer!!
Reinstalled Northern to internal memory with original map.cfg, then copied eastern to card and all is now OK.
BTW, I was confused for a while as I didn't realise the SD card was shown in explorer as a normal removable drive. i was looking for it inside the TT directory.
thanks again

as it shows up as a drive then you should be able to download the update direct to it as home gets confused and thinks its an internal drive even though its not. |

If the card is already a duplicate of the internal memory I.E. you have already copied and pasted absolutely everything from the device to the card, if you subsequently use home to update with only the card in a card reader, home thinks its the device anyway or that's the way it works for me. |

When I put my One XL card in a card reader, Home identifies it as 'One XL' bottom right, but when I download updates, it identifies as 'download to card reader'. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Certainly does - seems much faster transfer via a card reader than if connected directly to the device. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Yep, same for me on my 720. I copied everything onto a 4GB SDHC card, then connected that to the PC using a card reader. TT Home identified it as the device and offered me the complete Western Europe map, which downloaded to the card fairly quickly.

But the same should have happened if you'd left the card in the Go and used that as the reader.
The only advantages of using a card reader I can see are:
1. If it's a ONE or ONE XL, using a reader will be faster because those models only have USB1.1 capability - much slower than USB2
2. If Home decides to be stupid and try to install the map to the internal memory even though you have specified the card as the destination when Home started up. That's never happened to me. |
