Hello,
I have a brand new 540M XXL. It comes with maps of the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
First: I'm concerned, albeit prematurely, that eventually its disk storage will be at capacity. If that happens, as I have no need of maps of Mexico, does anyone know if there's a way to just download the maps of U.S. and Canada?
Secondly: I travel to the U.K. to visit family on occasion. Will I be able to download maps of the U.K.? Details?
Thanks. marty |

No you can't slice off a portion of the USA_Canada_Mexico map.
You can use Explorer to first copy the map to the computer (DON'T trust Home to do it!!) and then remove the map folder from the unt.
Then connect to Home and purchase the Europe map. You won't be able to install all of it on your unit but select the Europe_West zone to be installed.
When you're back in NA, move the Europe_West to the computer and copy back the USA_Canada_Mexico map.
(all the above assumes you do NOT have the 540 World Traveller Edition which comes with Western_Europe as well as USA_Canada_Mexico). _________________ David |

Does the 540M XXL have a SD card slot? If so you can add additional maps onto an SD card or move your current maps to it (or you can with all the units I have seen / used) and when you switch maps it will offer maps both from the internal and external memory. You can end up with the same map showing twice in the list!
If you travel just to the UK then the UK and Ireland map is cheaper and smaller than the Western Europe map - from memory only around 200MB rather than almost 2GB for the Western Europe map.
The Western Europe map is better value if you go beyond UK and Ireland as two European countries cost more (generally) than the whole of Western Europe. _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101

The 540 series does not come with a sd card slot. _________________ David |

A worry: If I do the above, would I lose my Lifetime Map subscription? |

You shouldnt because the map can copied back to the TT unit from the PC via TT Home or Windows Explorer without the TT servers knowing or caring.
I assume that you dont have 200MB spare on the unit to hold the UK and Ireland map?
It is a shame that you havent got an SD slot - I have never come across a x20, x30, x40 or x50 that doesnt have one. Presumably it is yet another cut down version but I see that it has a 5" screen that we dont get in the UK.
The lifetime map updates is a wonderful bonus - I have never seen this offered by TT in the UK - I only came across it at the weekend when looking for technical details of the Go 540 and 740 devices.
Presumably you would not et lifetime updates for any European maps you bought but this is still an excellent deal. Since TT still supply map updates (that we pay for) for x20 series in Europe the "lifetime" ought to be a few years yet. Envy! _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101
