| I have two TomTom devices & am concerned about the possible restriction of downloading third party P.O.I's (i.e. Pocket GPS). I upgrade with TomTom on regular basis for map share etc. Surely if they produce new software to exempt 3rd party POI's it would be possible to detect and just not download, unless it is embedded into New maps or map share. Anyone got any idea how to spot these files & how to avoid them if TT do go down this route ? |

They won't.
If the software on your unit supported full management of POIs when you bought it, then any software updates will continue to do so.
You may be thinking of the units WITHOUT POI Management. We found a way to add it, but TT then took it away again on a software update. |

Andy is that base upon information, or just hope? Given what they have done before it would not surprise me if TT tried this one. Wouldn't half increase the sales of their crappy camera database.
OOPS ...... shouldn't put thoughts into their little heads.

If you find that a future Navcore release does put any restrictions on your 3rd party POIs, all you have to do is reinstall your previous backup. You can bet your life that POI management is going to be far more useful than whatever they are going to add to the software!
You aren't compelled to upgrade to the latest software version.
However, I'm also with Andy - TomTom are very unlikely to do this. As other manufacturers permit 3rd party POI manipulation, they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they removed such functionality.

But they already have with at least some of their new models! And by the way I agree that it is shooting themselves in the foot.

indeed - the NEW MODELS have the feature removed. these new models were never sold with poi functionality and so for the user they have changed nothing. existing devices were sold with this feature and so, it seems likely that, it will stay. if they DO release an update that removes it then you can simply restore to a previous version.

All I can say is "Well done Tom Tom".
I won't be buying any new products. If 3rd party poi support is ever removed from my 730, I will stop buying new maps and just buy another company's sat nav.
Great way to do business, Tom Tom.

Another reason for TomTom to wake up to business reality and negotiate to purchase and run PGPSW's speed camera database.
This oldie is learning a lot more about the in's and out's of the market and it seems that prospective buyers of this kind of product are far more savvy than manufacturers realise.
Afterall today's generation is far more computer educated. |

As system updates are optional I would think they can include or omit anything they want, but like many other TT users I will not be purchasing another TomTom if this NONE feature is included in all future models so my current 550 may well my my third & last TomTom |

will reduce functionality in its products, wonder if this is connected, as FAT32 is to do with filenames?

Possibly something in the suit but i can't see how FAT32 patents would affect it. Maybe something here
I suspect it's something to do with having alerts to locations. Still looking.... |
