Map updates are free but they only come with each new version of Tomtom. There isn't any other way of updating them. |

So far they have been provided as part of an app updated FOC. No other mechanism for updates has been announced. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Whats the best price people have seen the TomTom mount selling for, Apple store currently £79 are there any better deals.
Also is the GPS in the iPhone any better than the previous units? |

The iPhone 4 uses the same new GPS chipset as the iPad. Tests with that have shown the GPS to be a good deal more sensitive, indeed I'd say they are on a par with what we would expect of a current generation GPS and about time too.
We can but hope that the same improvements are realised in the iPhone4, with the new antenna design it should be.
Personally I found the GPS in my 3GS adequate enough and never felt the need to resort to TT's carkit cradle. But others have had less luck and the 3G chipset is noticably less sensitive.
So if you are upgrading to iPhone4 and don't have a TT carkit I'd suggest waiting to see if you really need it (if it is just the GPS side that is the driving factor of course!). _________________ Darren Griffin |

It most definitely does NOT function. I've tried everything I can think of, but the car kit doesn't pair on the bluetooth side, it won't play audio, and it doesn't even charge the iPhone 4.
This rather puzzles me, since charging and audio out should be fairly basic functions, especially given that the dock connector hasn't changed. None of my other iPhone accessories are having any issues. The iPhone 4 snaps neatly and securely into the cradle... But the kit doesn't know the phone is even there.
I hope there's a software fix, but I suspect I'm going to have to drop another $99 on another car kit... *sigh* |

|

Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. Central my two new iPhone4's arrived. (mine & wife). With 1.4 installed on both (working fine including traffic), neither phone is recognized by the car kit. They do 'snap in' just fine, but there is no 'chirp of attachment', no charging icon, no audio out to the car stereo.
FAIL - utterly and completely, fail. |

A response from Apple about the TomTom Car Kit would be interesting as its classed as an official Apple accessory (listed on the Apple web site).
All I have have seen so far from Apple are various cars with built in Bluetooth systems that their new iPhone won't work with and Apples response to date has been "Its not an official iPhone accessory" (the car) so they are not interested. - Mike |

Yeah, I would be curious to see what Apple has to say, especially with the endorsement that it works with the iPhone 4, which it clearly does not.
Although apparently they've realized this... I just went back and looked, and the endorsement that it functions with the iPhone 4 is gone. |

Grab a copy of the screen image in the first post on page one of this thread as proof that iPhone_4 was listed before that gets pulled as well, then query it with Apple - Mike |

A small piece of cardboard (ironically a piece from the interior of the iPhone 4's shipping box) behind the dock connector (not just behind the phone, but behind the car kit's connector at the bottom) seems to have solved the issue completely.
I was a bit careful at first, since the phone seemed to resist a bit, but turns out that if you just do it slowly there's no undue resistance at all, it just clicks in. Basically go slow and watch the angle of the phone, and all's well. |

Or wait for TomTom to release an adapter for around £20 !?!?
Edit: It's not my video... I just came across it on another forum. _________________ Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. |
