I have a TT 720XL & recently acquired an iPhone.

I was going to install TT on my iPhone until I discovered I couldn't put the POIs on it. Your safety camera warnings are a great reason to have a PND.

So sorry TT, I have purchased my last TT device unless you change your standing on this

I have a TT 720, and have spoken to TT various times about the "Latest" maps that never get updated.
When my 720 dies, if the PGPSW database and POI's are not available to me, I'm afraid it will be goodbye to TomTom from me as well.

I once used the TomTom cameras.
First thing I noticed was a camera on the Portsmouth Road just outside Kingston that had been up for at least 9 months not on the TT database.
"not yet verified" they said.
"useless", I said "I want my money back"
They refused.
Subsequently I found out that the Police provide Tom Tom with their database..... provided they keep it a year out of date.
So they don't have to do any work ("verification" my arse!) and they charge top prices for something that is useless.
Must be a violation of Trading Standards.

Never mind, it led me to the discovery of Pocket GPS.
And I will happily get rid of Tom Tom to be able to keep Pocket GPS :-)

I hope TomTom are reading this thread!

If these are the responses from just a small sample of TomTom users they may want to reconsider their intentions?

Lesson learned. You want open source then don't buy TomTom. They will react to market forces nothing else

As like many others on this web site i pay for my speed camera updates, but if however TT do go down the route of no 3rd party add ons the i can't see the point in paying for something that you can't use.
From my point of view then i'd have to buy a PND that would allow 3rd party add ons. At present i have the TT540 and have paid for my map udates in advance for the next 12months or so.
So it could be bye bye TT if i ever get round to changing my PND

Can this move by Tom Tom be legal? I suspect its against the treaty of Rome to prevent access to a working system. Microsoft had to back down over the Internet Explorer and Fords had to back down over enforcing people to use their franchise to force people to take cars back there under warranty. I love my Tom Tom and on my 3rd but I am not being held to ransom by their exorbitant add on fees.!!

I have a tomtom one IQ routes edition and would like to know if updating through home tomtom will make my unit unable to accept custom poi. I am happy that I "recently" purchased this unit but when it dies I will be looking elswhere for a sat nav company that does have poi that I can personally use.

Only those units listed in the opening article are affected.

Any chance you can tell us which camera this is? Some more specific details about it's location?

Just my luck!

My much-loved TT One has recently become useless (constantly jumping into the menu when driving - despite stripping down the unit and thoroughly cleaning the touch screen right into the corners!) and the obvious thought was "I'll take the opportunity to buy a new TT with TMC aerial because it can use PGPSW camera data and I'll get traffic warnings as well" only to find that you can't warn near a POI on the new equivalent devices.

I'm currently borrowing my mother's original One XL which does all I really need (except traffic) - I drive about 30,000 miles a year for work and the PGPSW cameras are a godsend - but I'll have to give it back one day Laughing

I really don't want to go the GO/Live route... I guess that's another customer TT has lost - looks like I'll be buying a Navigon and POI-Warner like all my colleagues.

Never had an issue with TomTom, will never buy a Garmin, as I like many others know about their dealings in the past with well known retailers and pushing their products over everything else.

Navigon is big in Germany because its a German company, Garmin is big in America because Americans are so patriotic and think the sun shines out of the arse of anything USA based regardless of how good it is!

Vive le TomTom! Laughing

As others have stated my next device won't be a Tomtom.

But what is a viable alternative ????

The problem is that TT are, regrettably, the de facto standard setting bunch when it comes to SatNav features that we want.

Co-Pilot is the cheapest alternative with the features we're used to, but their routing guidance can be somewhat naff to say the least, and the way they handle POI files is just plain annoying to me, at least - I trialled their last version, and I was about ready to launch it into orbit with the hellish number of alerts it threw at me - often every five metres for the majority of cameras, for pities sake!

iGo's a non starter for me, as you can only use it on the supplied 2 gig card; I carry well over 8 gigs on my card, and that's without SatNav software, so again, that's a non starter, given that the card slot is under the cover of my phone.

I've tried others as well, and settled back in January to NavMii, but that's got issues too - no directional warnings, CVS import for the one file only, and it can't take any other custom POI files in at this time (I've been badgering GeoLife on and off since then, rest assured!).

The problem does not appear to be the requirement - I think they al realise it's something they have to address and introduce, at least on some level - it's the development cost and the avoidance of treading on the patents that someone else may have in the process that's the issue.

We will, in any case, eventually see results: It's just a matter of time, I guess.

Sorry not to be abble to give you better news.

What we are seeing with Tom Tom's move here is that most punters just want to open the box and use the kit. Look at the iPhone, such a locked down pile of cr*p, but it sells in its millions - it looks great and does what most people want out of the box - they don't know / care about what IS possible.

Surely this is the normal progression of these things - early adopters can see the benefits of all the techy stuff and are prepared to download and tweak, then all the plebs come on board and want it simple. Trouble is it pushes us nerds out. Even Pocket GPS World are guilty of this; Windows Mobile has all but disappeared from these pages - its iPhone all the way.

I love my WM phone, and use it for EVERYTHING, but I fear for it as an OS; MS are doing exactly the same as TT.
