My Dad has asked me to look at his TomTom 720. When he turns it on, it shows the tomtom screen, then the loading screen, and then a screen that he has put on it (looks like a sea pic), after that everything just blacks out. I have tried the reset button, but other that that, I have no idea what to do. I would appreciate any and all advice. _________________ Clive

First off try giving the reset switch a prod as this will force the device to re-load the software, note you won't loose any settings trying this.
Secondly, if option one didn't work connect the device to your computer, if Home starts up shut it down and use Windows Explorer to view the drive letter associated with the device, when you first open the drive letter associated with the unit this is known as the "Root", in here are lots of folders and quite a few files, delete these loos files
DO NOT TOUCH ANY FOLDERS OR FILES WITHIN FOLDERS
Next fire up Home and select update device, this should re-install the Navcore software and hopefully when the device boots up it will now work - Mike |

(I originally posted this in the other topic, just as Mike was locking it. So rather then just delete it, I've moved it here, even though most of it just says the same as Mike's reply).
When the TT normally starts, it should start up fairly quickly, only showing any "splashscreen" you've added. If you see a loading progress bar, that means it's re-booting (or trying to) every time.
You need to be able to connect the TT to your computer and browse the contents of the TT's internal memory with Windows Explorer. Can you do that OK?
First thing to do after that, is make a backup as itthe TT is now. See our FAQs at the top of this forum section. Don't go any further until you've done that.
Then (just in case) remove the added splash screen, which will be called "Splashw.bmp" and can be found in the top level (the "root directory" of the TomTom.
If that doesn't help, delete all the files which are NOT in yellow folders (do NOT delete any folders). Then run TomTom's Home utility (downloadable from HERE, select "Update my Go and it should offer to replace the operating software. |

Iam sure that my 520 does this or very similar when the battery is flat.
Just a thought

Also look for folders that don't belong there.
I have my netbook set to back up all of my important files to a 16Gb SD card that I leave permanently installed in one slot (well most of the time.) A couple of times, I've taken it out and put one of my TomTom SD cards in there (so I can copy from another card in the other slot) and the backup has run while the card has been in there, throwing across thousands of files that TomTom doesn't understand.
Symptoms (on the Renault system) are that TomTom appears to be booting up, spends ages on the splash screen, then crashes, reboots and repeats this cycle continuously. That sounds suspiciously similar to what your 720 is doing. _________________ TomTom GO700

Only comment I'd make is not to remove the recovered file fragment files; recall Windows calls them that, though they're no such thing!. _________________ Gel
