Hi
I'm new to this site so sorry if this question has been asked before. I have just purchased a hp ipaq 4150.
I was interested to know which is the best gps add on to get for this with the best coverage for Ireland especially street by street in Dublin and other cities.
Also if i purchase lets say the tom tom navsystem. Can any maps be used. Once your pda is set up for gps or are you stuck with using only the maps suplied by the manufactor of your gps add on |

No one covers more than about 50% of Ireland (North and South).
There are two map providers, TeleAtlas and Navteq. All street mapping programs use data from one or the other of these suppliers.
For Ireland, Navteq are currently the one with better coverage. Also be aware that some vendors sell maps which are older than others. As well as how pretty the mapping application looks, you have to ask "TeleAtlas or Navtaq maps?" and "When were they updated". Don't get fobbed off on this question, make them find out and give you the release date of the mapping data.
The best thing to do is make a list of a few cities, find a dealer and try the various mapping applications out to see how good the coverage is.
The good news is that both map providers give excellent, 100% coverage of Dublin and Belfast (which is where I have used it most) with some other cities but there are large chunks which are not covered. It's smaller cities and interconnecting roads that you want to check.
I'm sorry that I can't give a straight recommendation of what to buy, things change so quickly. Do let us know what you buy and how you get on with it!
As for using other maps with your streetmapping application - you can't really do this. All of the UK roads fit into about 120 Meg of data and it is stored in a special vector format with extra information about turn restrictions, road types etc. No way will they allow people to use other maps.
You can use scanned maps with something like Fugawi, but scanned maps take up a fair amount of space and you don't get the lovely autorouting features.
Good Luck! |

Actually NAVTEQ have just upped the anti, and now have considerable coverage of Northern Ireland.
Checking in CoPilot Live 5, check out the following:-
Detailed Coverage now includes:-
- Londonderry
- Carrickfergus
- Newtonabbey
- Templepatrick
- Antrim
- Belfast
- Holywood
- Dundonald
- Newtownards
- Bangor
- Groomsport
- Donaghadee
- Ballywalter
- Portadown
- Lurgan
- Dunmurry
- Lisburn
- Hillsborough
- Moira
- Malahide
- Dublin
- Dun Laoghaire
- Swords
- Bray
- Waterford
- Cork
There are other town's/provinces that do have coverage, but only show a few roads, or just side roads off a main road, and I don't have extensive knowledge of Ireland to tell if that's accurate or not. Also enhanced are the major roads which at a glance I would say covers probably most of the major roads in Ireland because there are just so many showing on the map! |

See the review of CoPilot Live - Pocket PC 5 this might be the one that you want. Importantly it has the 2004 Navteq maps which include improved coverage of Ireland. |
