Do you remove the mount?

I ALWAYS remove the Satnav and my RoadPilot pro devices.

However all the mounts stay in as they are hardwired.
My pocketgps sticker is displayed right next to the satnav mount. Wink

What I do is open the glove box, armrest box and even a small lidded box on the top of the dashboard.

I've parked the car in some rough places but never (touch wood) had any problems.

I feel that opening all the storage compartments up (they are empty anyway), demonstrate that you are not hiding anything of value.

This has worked I'm sure as neighbouring cars have been broken in to whilst mine was untouched.

Also dont leave any coats, hats or anything remotely EBAYable in the car, because thats all they are after. Evil or Very Mad

My Zumo 550 car mount got stolen from the car last night. It was on the floor of the passenger footwell - not visible unless you peered in with a torch.

I thought that was good enough - obviously wrong!

Anyone got a spare one they want to sell me?

I'm revisiting TomTom after several years of hardly using it. My last car had factory sat-nav, and while I did install a the permanent docking kit for my TomTom, I stopped using it very early on. My next car has TomTom built in, but won't be delivered until March or April. In the meantime, I'm driving a hire car and I'm back to using my old GO700.

One question that hasn't been asked yet: Are the crooks now smart enough to know the difference between an old and a new style mount? Presumably the Classic/300/500/700 aren't worth the cost of a couple of pints down at your crook's favourite local these days. Surely the clued-up ones will only take a risk for the more compact, higher spec'd bigger screened ones that might actually net them a useful amount of money on the black market. Or are we just dealing with thugs with one brain cell who think 'Ooh! Me see sucker thing. Me break window'?

To date, I've been leaving the bracket in place when I've removed all of my valuables from the car, and hiding the bracket when I have one or more valuable items stored elsewhere. The logic being that I don't want them breaking in for the TomTom, discovering that it isn't there, rifling through the boot and finding my laptop. There are times when it just isn't practical to take everything with you and some valuables have to stay in the car.

FWIW: I had the permanent docking kit bracket on show in my last car for over four years without incident. But (like others earlier in the thread) it was dash mounted rather than windscreen mounted.

I learnt my lesson a couple of years ago. For the first time I forgot to remove my widscreen mount when I was using my old GoClassic. When I came out to my van the next morning, both front side windows were smashed! The mount had gone and thankfully that was all as I had removed the device completly.
The van had deadlocks and they must have really struggled as they couldn't open the doors.

I am now very careful, removing the mount and wiping the windscreen too!

That was the one and only time I had left the mount in place, I won't do it again. What a mess the broken glass makes.

A couple of options for your 750:

1/ Purchase the accessory mount straight from TomTom that screws to a Brodit Pro-Clip and you have a dash mounted install for the Navigation device.

2/ Purchase a Brodit "Ball" intended for the iPhone car kit and fit that to your existing 750 mount to turn it in to a Brodit Pro-Clip compatible holder

Right now, since regretfully the 700 external antenna function has packed up, I have only four mounts which I leave on the van screen - GO520, XL Live, HTC Advantage and TomTom Car Kit for iPhone. I simply can't be bothered to remove them - how long is it going to take every time I stop and start? Or even just night and morning?

I did get the van done one night a couple of years ago - normally it was safe because the local crims lived opposite. At least one of them did come across when the police were here taking details and told us that he'd seen it happening, but he hadn't come across to tell me because it was 1:30 in the morning and he didn't want to wake me. Unfortunately he couldn't give a description - I expect he was that thick he couldn't look in a mirror. All they got was my leather-look CD disk holder pouch (free with 10 litres of Esso) full of classical music and brass bands (I bet he got a fortune for them down the local!) and my Maglite torch. I was still finding bits of glass the day I sold the van. I too didn't waste my no claims bonus on a side window.

Edit to add... Mike, it's alright for you - I don't have that many air vents! Laughing

Well I got away with it in the hire car (Mondeo) I always left the bracket on at home overnight, but generally took the bracket off the windscreen when parking the car at work or in any public car park. I didn't bother wiping off sucker marks, and I just left the mount dumped in the driver's footwell. Perhaps I got lucky, but the car either didn't attract the attention of crooks in the first place, or the ones who saw it realised that what was on offer wasn't worth taking.

I'm back to built-in sat-nav now (Renault Carminat TomTom) so it's no longer an issue. I don't think anyone's going to try to steal this one, unless they're planning to take the whole car.

I never remove my mount as it would also mean removing the charger and the TMC aerial. Personally I think if you leave the mount, advertising the fact you have a sat nav then it's obvious you don't leave it in the vehicle.

I've thought about putting a laminated note on the dash "Sat-Nav NEVER left in vehicle", similar to the ones vans have on thme regarding tools, what do the others think of this idea?
