I had intended to leave 'Home' blank to avoid any thief being able to relieve me of my prized possessions in the event he got his hands on the unit. Unfortunatley, I forgot and went and set it.
Is there a way to return it to a blank entry without having to go through a Factory Reset and the consequent re-entry of my preferred settings?

Can't you just set it to somewhere else using the TomTom Home software? i.e. Buckingham Palace? |

I'd prefer the 'neatness' of it being blank.
As for setting it to Buckingham Palace, I'm sure her Maj wouldn't be too happy if she got another uninvited visitor to her royal bed chamber! _________________ Frank |

The location is stored in the mapsettings.cfg file along with a lot of other stuff including Favourites and all the camera alert settings. You could delete this file but it will mean doing all the settings again.
Do what I do and put it somewhere public nearby (mine's in the back lot of a local car dealership). This means that you can use the 'navigate to... home' quick entry to get back to your nearby streets without it actually pointing to your home itself. _________________ Gerry

Just set it to near home as in the nearest turning into your street, that way a thief would not know which was your house and you can still use the easy navigaste to home feature.
I am not sure how a thief stealing a TomTom would then be able to burgle a house unless they stole the house keys at the same time and then that would also mean ensuring there was never any other information that could identify where you lived. _________________ Drivelux |

It's a 'known' problem.
'Home' tells them where you live and, as they've taken it from your car away from that address, they can reasonably expect that you're not in residence. After that it's standard 'we haven't got a key so we'll break in using the usual methods'. _________________ Frank |

It's a fear that has stemmed from one story i think. The story goes a handbag was stolen from a car. The handbag contained a sat nav and a set of house keys and a set of keys for their second car. The theif used the sat nav to go to the owners home which was then identified using the car remote to find the right house. The house was burgled and the car (a Saab i believe) was stolen.
In reality i can't see it being a method widely used by thieves. We know these things are being stolen by the hundreds each week yet still no concrete link between a sat nav being stolen and a home being burgled. After all just because they have your sat nav it doesn't mean the house is empty or that there isn't a bloody great big dog in the house.
Burglars don't use clever tactics. The story above is an exception as they had the house location and the keys. They are opportunists. They are not going to travel 15 miles to see if your house might be empty when there are hundreds in the immediate vicinity. |

The story is here
Turns out what i've been told isn't quiet the same. Still i don't think there's a big link between the two. Another way to look at it would be if you had your pocket picked in London and you had your drivers license in your wallet wouldthe thief then rush straight round to your house? I've spoken to my local Comminuty Officer about this before and it's not really an issue they are aware of. |

I agree it may be unlikely but it's happened and I prefer not to leave things to chance when avoidance is quite easy. _________________ Frank |

I have my GO520 protected by the security setting that needs a 4 digit code to operate it. I have a message on the enter password page offering a reward for safe return and my mobile number.
This way no one can get it to show where I live if it is stolen, but I still may get it back if I lose it..............

Ahh, but what if "digital" is actually a member of the royal family? |

Anyone who puts their actual address in the Home setting shouldnt be using a satnav.
I only use the Home setting with TTN as its easier to work with when navigating to POIs from start-up.
I would recommend people use the entrance to their street and just call it the road name. ... This way, any theves have to start at the first house until they get to yours _________________ TomTom 700 GO user since Dec 2005.

Snopes take on it - moral make sure no keys are left in car
The problem with the theory - how do they know your house is empty just because you out with satnav? if a long way from home they are hardly going to drive miles to check an area they don't know?
Just change it to road start or local police station if really worried about it[/url] _________________ J. |
