The GlobalSat DG-100 USB data logger is a strange bird. Looking rather square-ish it will certainly not win any prices for good looks, although the overall design is not too shabby either.

So, let's look for something else that differentiates this device from the other data loggers on the market.

Hi lbendlin.
Why you say about CP230x driver, but later use COM5 with common Prolific CP210x USB-to-Serial converter???

One thing I did not understand is how tracks are separated. One theory is that if the logger loses and regains a fix then a new track is started. I don't think I like that approach - I would want to be able to start a new track by power cycling the device (like it is done on the Wintec WBT-100). But for now you can end up with multiple tracks per journey, and true to Murphy only one track at a time can be exported to Google Earth.

I completely agree that the file handling in the DG-100 is a bit strange. But your "Murphy conclusion" is not correct. You can actually merge any number of tracks into one output file. However this might require quite some clicking in the track list to select the correct ones. The PC application should include the ability to filter based on time, not only speed. Hopefully future versions of the PC application will include this.

Read it again - I use "COM5 with a Prolific converter". It does _not_ state Prolific 210x converter. Just Prolific. The device manager doesn't show the 230x in this view.

sorry, not possible. However, I would say the receiver is somewhere in the middle SiRF III range. I did see a few spikes, but nothing systemic. The position itself was accurate enough (have a look at the DOP values)

I just bought a DG-100 last week from Semsons, and I did not have any problems with logging and mode switching. I was able to continue logging between all three modes during a trip from Los Angeles to San Diego.

I have created an API using .NET for the DG-100 data logger. It allows you to create an application and access the data on the device.

I've made some executive decisions on parts of the way the data is handled (addressing some of your issues in this thread). I don't differentiate between the different headers the device returns. I just return a long list of all the points in the device in chronilogical order. Your software can use logic to seperate the different tracks, etc.

You can monitor and download the API at http://dg100gpslogger.spaces.live.com/

Hopefully people will start to develop more applications using this software.

Regards

are there any updates on this device since 2007.
From the review it seems some buggy locations recorded,
changing the settings a/b/c wouldnt work till power cycle done.
unit cant be permanently wired as it wont work when being charged,
you can end up with multiple tracks per journey, and true to Murphy only one track at a time can be exported to Google Earth.
What other devices come recommend?

I am after two kinds of gps.
One with logging and no gsm sim card. (hard wired in car)
and one with gsm sim card (hard wired in car)

thanks for the reply.
the Columbus V900 is not available in australia.

Any other recommend device, also for a gps that has a sim card.
Does anyone know what sort of data usage gps trackers will use if in data mode (not sms mode)
From what I can see the current consumption is much higher in this mode.
It may be cheaper to run, depending on your sim provider.

It wasn't available here in the UK either but it was sufficiently good that many of us bought from the US. And it is a superb datalogger, possibly the best of its kind.
