|
|
I'm looking for a good-quality TomTom EasyPort air vent mount to use with a TomTom Start.
The various reviews on Amazon and elsewhere aren't too helpful - can anyone recommend one which actually works?
Thanks in advance ... |

I've found vent mounts almost universally unreliable. However, Arkon have a range of Easyport options and they also offer a vent mount which is better than most:

If Brodit sell the TomTom Ball then its quite easy to make up a vent clip mount to suit your car, I will have a look for some links later today - Mike |

Thanks for the responses - I know they're not ideal but it's the best compromise in terms of location. |

Though not using the EasyPort itself, Brodit do holders for the Start that can be attached to their ProClip. Depending on your car, there could well be a ProClip that is in the air vent area (usually clips between panels nearby).

This shows what my thoughts were earlier today before I shot off to work:
The mount as supplied with the device is easy to unclip from the main body and if you look closely at the hinge portion you will see two Philips headed screws:
Remove the screws and the mount comes to bits very easily indeed:
Next you need a Brodit Pro-Clip to match your vehicle and a TomTom size Brodit Ball mount, this one was removed from an x40 mount, currently Brodit don't sell this ball as a single component but I am sure if they are asked about it they could supply just the ball which simply screws to the Pro-Clip using self tapping screws::
Assemble the mount on to the ball using the two Philips head screws and the top ball cover, don't over tighten just nip the screws up so they won't work loose:
Fit the assembly in the car (in this case my Ovlov V70), this is classed as an air-vent Pro-Clip but it actually locates in to the dash above and below the airvent providing a very stable and secure fixture but, as it only clips in to the car its easy to remove and leaves no trace or damage to the vehicle:
A quick look at what the assembly looks like in the car with the device removed:
Food for thought - Mike |

Thanks - that looks very professional but I need something I can order and send to someone else ready-done.
The ProClip looks like a good solution, but it's almost half the price of the TomTom together with the mount - are there any self-adhesive EasyPort mounts which could just be secured to the front of the ProCLip?
Otherwise, I think I'll take a chance on the Arkon one or something like this:

Arkon are well respected and fairly cheap. EasyDevices have it in stock for £16, see here.

Wow, is that vent mount AND EasyPort part for that price? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I have a funny feeling the Start device won't fit the TT-129 vent mount as the Start doesn't use a true version of the Easy-Port instead it has a retaining lug at the top and sprung plastic locking lever at the bottom, it certainly doesn't use the round ring most of the XL devices have for mounting - Mike |

You're right, it won't. I'd got confused somewhere along the line with talk of EasyPort and assumed we were discussing TomTom ONE's/
The START will definitely NOT fit the EasyPort mount _________________ Darren Griffin |

Damn. Why can't it be simple?
The TomTom webpage shows two EasyPort mounts as Start accessories, one here:
http://www.tomtom.com/products/accessories/accessory.php?ID=970&Product=1161&Category=
The Start2 appears to have the EasyPort fitting - seemingly, the original Start doesn't.
The unit was ordered about three weeks ago, so I'm assuming it's a Start2 - I won't buy anything else until I've had a chance to check. |

Start and Start2 are identical in design and mount.
The ONE v4 had a similar mount but it attached to the unit in a different way. If you look at the ONE XL Image below (same EasyPort mount as ONE), you will see it affixes using a ring which clips around the outside of the speaker grill. That is why it differs from the Start.
I'm afraid the Start is widely derided, it's a cheap cut down satnav that lacks a number of features which we believe should never have been omitted. Is it too late to return it and get a ONE instead? _________________ Darren Griffin |
