Can anybody tell me if it is possible to wire the car kit directly into the 12V supply, rather than using the cigarette lighter output to tidy things up a little? Is the power dropped down to a lower voltage via the cable supplied with the kit? Is it actually 12v that is supplied to the iPAQ 2210 cradle?
I would hate to do this before checking first!
Thanks in advance

The iPAQ cradle has 5V written on its base, so I presume that is also the output voltage of your cigar lighter adapter. Connecting it directly to your battery might be rather expensive!

Yes that's fine and I understand that, but it says "12v out" on the cigarette lighter, so either the voltage is dropped in the cable or the holder or it doesn't matter and 12v is ok? |

If you are referring the the Official TomTom CarKit then yes you can.
I am not sure if your version came with a cable with 2 bare wires or not. TomTom used to include a direct connect cable as part of the package. Aparently the lack of socumentation confused people so rather than improving the instructions they removed the cable.
I have been told that this can be obtained from the TomTom website, though I dont know where on the site. _________________ Mike Barrett |

I'd recommend wiring a 12v cigar lighter socket to your car. They are only pennies from Maplin and it will make it easy to remove your system if you need to fit it in another vehicle. |

But you already have the cigarette power adapter wth the TT carkit so you can move it between cars. This is for a permanent setup in your main vehicle. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Thanks for the replies. I have had a reply from Tom Tom and they say it is ok to wire straight to a 12v supply for a tidier connection, but adive the assitance of a qualified auto-electrcian, however, they do not have any cables to do this. You have to source a connector elsewhere. (see reply from MikeB)
My plan was to keep the one for the cigarette lighter for easy movement between cars, but a more permanent connecton for my main vehicle would be much nicer. |

This is the reply cut and pasted
Dear Mr xxxxxxx,
This should be possible but we always advise that this is done by a qualified auto-electrician, please note we do not have any extra cables for this.
With best regards,

Can I wire my Tom Tom car kit directly to 12v supply rather than using the cigarette lighter cable attachment?
My kit is only 1 month old and the code is nav_bt_2210 |

When I bought my TT Car Kit for the XDA nearky a year ago now, It came with 2 leads. One to plug in the cigar lighter and the other to hard wire direct from a 12 volt supply. This is because in the base of the holder is a small printed circuit board that reduces the 12 volt supply down to the voltage that the XDA requires which is 5 volts 2.0 amps. Also works with the XDA II.
Some of the TT Car Kits have the Voltage reduction circuitry built into the cigar lighter plug making it more difficult to hard wire.
Having said this, looking on the TT web site it appears that they no longer supply a car kit for the XDA's, so appears to be another item that TT have discontinued. _________________ Graham.
