Halfords One IQ routes edition

I've today purchased one of the above, special price from Halfords and I'm really disappointed............

Main problems are:

1/ It wont accept full post codes.

2/ I should be able to get a free 3 month trial to Tom Tom safety alerts (and fuel prices) and I can't

3/ I can't get into the 'map share' section without being asked for money, I thought map share was free?

4/ I would like to be able to transfer 100's of my favorites and poi's from my old Garmin i3, does anyone know if this is possible?

5/ The TomTom website is a mine field - every where you look they want more money - even for services that are supposed to be free.

Are all TomToms like this or only those 'available only at Halfords' ?

I think i'll be going back to Halfords tomorrow to exchange for another Garmin......

Thanks fellas - I'll take another crack at it today, and try your fixes.

In the meantime, I have already installed home and registered the TT.

I don't have an alternative email address, but why, when the device is registered to that address, would I need to have an alternative?

And don't use any non alphanumeric characters - I once used a '_' and all kinds of odd things happened - LIVE Services would work on the device, but I coudn't login to HOME (or it might have been the other way round).

I've been going through the menus and generally messing about with the device for a few days now, I do believe that I'm actually getting to like it.....

Did you ever get it to accept the full post codes?

Did you manage to join MapShare (free)?

Do you still want/need to transfer your POIs from the Garmin?

To be honest I'm not sure where Garmins store their Favourites, but POIEdit can certainly convert between Garmin and TomTom POI category files, and can also open the file that TomTom's use for their Favourites (MapSettings.cfg).

EDIT:
I tried a quick Google, and it seems the Garmin Favourites are saved in a file called "current.gpx" located in G:\Garmin\gpx and according to the POIEdit FAQs, it can read and write to .gpx format.

So unless the file is encrypted in some way, you could well be in luck. Smile

So I download the files from the garmin to a temp diectory - create a new poi category in the TomTom and use 'PoiEdit' to upload from the PC to that file..........if I understood that correctly, should be a 'piece of cake'

Err, maybe..... but that's not how I'd do it!

I know POI Edit has some sort of automatic update feature, but I've never used it (for a start it cannot work with sites like this one because the POI lists are compiled "on the fly" as you download them).
I just use it to look at the contents of POI files, to convert them from one file format to another, and to merge several files together.

What I would do is this:

Install POI Edit.
Run it
Open the Garmin files one by one
Save whatever you can as separate .ov2 files (on to the PC)

Copy them onto the TomTom by 'click and drag' or 'copy and paste' using Windows Explorer.
