So when they zoom by at 70, plus a lot more, they only have to watch out for gatsos, not even worry about mobile traps.

That's pretty much true, except they need to watch out for our brake lights so they don't join us via the rear window. And police mobile handheld cameras will get them, simply by turning round to hunt them down from behind. One biker was caught on a forward facing camera, because he regularly performed high speed wheelies and gave the camera a rude gesture as it photo-ed him - he forgot he was riding one of (only three, I think?) distinctive bikes in the country!

Sadly (for imminent organ donors, erm, I mean motorcyclists) this is no longer true.

SPECS3 can be setup as a forward OR rearward facing system, so it CAN catch motorcycles. See:

http://www.speedcheck.co.uk/SPECS3_overview.pdf

However, I must add that I don't think I've ever seen a rear-facing setup IRL...

The recent set on M4 near Bristol (J19 to 18) did have some cameras facing both directions, but that's the only case I've seen myself.

I can't seem to find if anyone has the answer to my original question about Average Speed Camera site notification.

I accept that some people stick to all speed limits but one supposes that most people who frequent this site have an interest in speed cameras because they may not stick to all limits all the time; so, from those who need to know when they are being 'averaged', is there a technical way for my StreetPilot 2820 to tell me, based on the data provided by this site, when I am being averaged, or not?

I posed a simple question a few posts ago; does anyone have a simple answer.

I don't need tips on sticking to limits or driving carefully; I've got a clean license, drive 20,000 plus a year and only ever stick religiously to 30 and 40 limits (or lower) and some useful 50's. Paying attention, good observation and this site keep me on the right side of the courts.

So, can I tell when I am still in a SPECS zone?

Many thanks.

Then you will no doubt notice the large yellow cameras mounted on blue poles with the batman symbol in the corner. Very Happy Very Happy

I don't know about your satnav, but iGO based software calculates your average speed within a SPECS zone Very Happy . The implementation is not as good as it could be though Sad

The PocketGPSWorld speedcamera database does include such details as "End of average speed Camera". I don't know if your device is capable of using that information.

If that feature is important to you, I do know one device which DOES do the business, namely the iPhone 3GS running PocketGPSWorld's CamerAlert App (ONLY runs on iPhone). It gives a notification "All Clear" when you pass the last one in a set. It is not 100% accurate, as the specs cameras at roadworks are so fluid these days that they are erected and dismantled very quickly (so 99.99% accurate). It should be accurate for permanent installations though. It also displays the speed limit and your average speed.

As for you not needing tips on sticking to limits or driving carefully, I have to disagree if your attitude is that over 40mph the limits are there for you to observe or not at your own discretion. If your licence is valuable to you, I suggest you revise that attitude, because one of these days it'll let you down. I'd hate to try my 60,000 a year with that outlook.

Has anybody on here ever been caught in a specs zone?
Or know of anybody?

I haven't, but I know loads who have points on there licence from other cameras/gatso etc.

I also regularly see people speeding in these specs zones.

My opinion is they dont work, or not very well
I dont trust them though, just to be safe Laughing

Dunno mate. I will look next time because my SNOOPER Truckmate GPS gives me an audio during "SPECS".

Well, they have done their job then! True, they probably don't work 100% of the time, but even if they catch or deter 95% of the speeders then that's good enough.

Yes, I know people who have been done by SPECS. That's not to say that every installation is actually live or 100% accurate, but I can't see why they would have a dummy one.

I do have good evidence that the front facing SPECs don't work for motorcyclists though. Wink

They are average speed cameras, so unless your average is 10% +2mph of the speed limit or greater, you 'should' be ok.

There are plenty of reports of people being caught by them, especially in roadworks.

I have also seen people flying past me, totally ignoring the temporary speed limits, and I guess they either didn't see the speed limit signs due to being on mobile phone or other distraction, have false plates or are not aware of SPECS camera system or foreign drivers.
