Hi – thanks to help from PGPSW members I have successfully downloaded USA maps ready for next weeks holiday. Daft question, but upon arriving in the US do I just use “Manage Maps” to switch to the US maps and let my TomTom 520 find the GPS signal, or is there anything else I need to tweak / specify when I get there ?
I would hate to be at the airport, car full of wife and kids, load the US maps and nothing happens because I have not changed a certain setting.
Many thanks for any help you can give. |

Yes, you use manage maps to switch maps when you get there and wait for your tomtom to get a GPS lock. This will probably take longer than normal because of the distance that you have moved since the device was switched off.
Have you ticked the setting that warns you to drive on the "wrong" side of the road?
You will probably also want to change the time on the tomtom as it won't know about the time zone change.
Have a good holiday. _________________ Paul |

When you get off the plane switch the TomTom unit on and let it acquire a GPS signal, it should pop an on-screen message about switching to a more suitable map due to your location - simply press Yes, it will do the same again when you get back to this side of the pond - Mike |

One other thing: If you are getting a rental car, warm up the satnav as soon as you get to the car so it has a good lock, and then add a favourite to mark the location of the rental place. This will make returning the car a lot easier.
However, if it is like mine behaved, when you set to return to the rental favourite, it will say there is no route found. This is because the car was in the middle of a rectangle of roads. To fix that, I browsed the map, used find to see the favourite (sorry, favorite) and then tapped on the road and said to navigate there. The favourite made it very easy despite the worry it gave initially. |
