Has anyone tried a F54629631 Battery ( made for a TT 1 )
in a TT Go 720,730,920,or a 930.

The reason I ask is that it has 1350 mAh and the replacements for these models have 1300 mAh

The battery I took out of my 920 has 1320 mAh . The F54629631 looks to be about the same size and they are both 3.7 Volt

If it will physically fit, and the connectors are the same, I don't see it should be a problem.

But between 1300mAh and 1350mAh is less than 4%, so it might not make much practical difference - 5 minutes or so on a 2 hour life?

You are right it would be hardly worth it.
I was talking to the supplier yesterday ( batteryship.com ) and they said they are working on a battery that would be 2600 mAh, now if they can get that to fit that would be worth considering for sure.

Just replaced the battery in my wife's G 520. All reassembled and powered up ok, except that it permanently wants to connect to the PC, even when not physically connected.

I've tried disconnecting using both menu and icon in TT Home, and also Windows 'safely remove hardware'. Result is the same; device disconnects, then almost immediately tries to reconnect. Also, the device won't shut down using the power button; it just seems to act like a soft reset and reboots. It will shut down if I do a hard reset, but then tries to connect to the PC again as soon as I power it up.

I tried restoring from a backup, using TT Home, but get a message telling me some volumes (eg a storage card) are missing:

ERROR: Note: Some volumes (for example, a storage card) that were present during a previous backup are not currently present on your navigation device, and cannot be backed up or restored.

Home recognises the memory card on connection, and I can see all folders and files on both device and SD card using Windows. Also, there are no system files on the SD card, only MP3s.

Any ideas, anyone?

What have you used to stick the new battery in place? and is there any chance the adhesive is still "wet" if so press the reset button on the base and try the device again in the morning as I have seen strange behaviour from changing a battery if the device is switched on with the glue (silicon sealant) still being fluid - Mike

Thanks for the reply, Mike.

I used double-sided car trim tape, which is dry, but I did use Sticky Stuff Remover to get rid of the old glue. It should have been dry by the time I put it back together but I'll try leaving it in the airing cupboard overnight and see what happens.

Well, the airing cupboard didn't work - behaviour is still random. I've removed and re-installed the application, then re-formatted the internal storage and removed and re-installed the application again. Device began restart but wouldn't complete unless reset button pressed. TT Home says installation complete. The device now behaves as follows:

Reset: After pressing reset button for 15 sec then power button for 5 sec, text screen appears with system info. Device then hangs until either reset or power button pressed briefly, when it switches off.

Power on while connected to PC by USB: Device connects to PC immediately, TT Home opens and device shows connected. Windows message 'do you want to scan and fix?', then 'Windows can't check the disk while it's in use'.

Disconnect device: Shows disconnected and safe to remove. When USB unplugged, progress bar at bottom of screen scrolls left to right as it does during connection to PC (usually scrolls right to left on disconnection). Startup legal notice then appears but device doesn't respond to touch on 'I Agree' button.

Power up - not connected to PC: Startup legal notice appears but device doesn't respond to touch on 'I Agree' button.

During restart after re-installing application, touch screen gave limited response but able to set language preferences, home location etc via TT Home. Tried disconnecting and re-connecting screen ribbon cable but no change.

Not sure now whether I have a software problem or hardware - possible PCB damage. Beginning to think I've knackered it.

Double check you have got the ribbon cable from the screen fully seated in its multiway socket on the main PCB, its quite easy to get this slightly out of true when assembling - Mike

I've tried reconnecting the cable 4 or 5 times, to no effect. nuvi 1390t replacement just arrived - good price from saverstore.com, and handtec competitive too.

If anyone else fancies having a go, I have a brand new battery; PM me.

I'm amazed at the number of posts since I posted my original inquiry. since then I've replaced the batteries in two TomTom 720s.

Tip #1 is use a solvent, (Goo Gone, Sticker Lifter, WD40, etc.) While holding the TomTom at an angle apply a few drops so that they run under the battery. Wait a few minutes and reapply.

Tip #2 take an old credit card, cut in half or thirds lengthwise. Sharpen one end. Carefully use that to slide under the battery and lift it.

Tip #3 be very carefully with whatever tool you use to pry up the battery. I knocked several surface mount components off the board in the first TomTom I did. I did manage to get them soldered back on, but that is very tricky.

Tip #4 clean up the solvent, wipe with dry paper towel then use rubbing alcohol.

Tip #5 for mounting the new battery I used tacky putty (intended for hanging posters on walls). Double sided foam tape from Radio Shack would likely work or double sided carpet tape.

Finally bit the bullet and changed the batt on my 720 and everything went smoothly.

Spent around 45 minutes last night replacing the battery in my TT Go 520. Worked first time - much easier than the Digitiser I replaced in my Nokia 5800 Phone last week.

Very useful instructions. I chose the "unwrap the cell" approach. Once I removed the manufacturers label the cell was basically wrapped in an envelope shaped adhesive plastic - removing the cell from this and inserting the new one in the sticky plastic worked a treat.

Allright folks,

I had no probs replacing the battery (I could just unfold the tape and gently pull it out).

BUT: I am trying to reconnect my flat cable, but the connector doesn't click into place, so the flat cable doesn't stay where it should. Should the tape be stuck to both the connector ánd the flat cable?

Tips/tricks welcome, although I think I've screwed it up.

The tape is just used to hold the ribbon cable in place - it isnt actually necessary.

The ribbon cable pushes horizontally (ie nearly flat to the board) into the connector and the clip (usually white?) clicks down to hold it in place. Got to be careful that the cable is exactly in the centre of the connector otherwise it will not go it.

720 battery successfully replaced! WD40 and two mobile phone opening tools made it - relatively - easy to remove old battery. Now working again under battery power. Had permission from SWMBO to replace if I failed in my attempt, which made it easier! Very Happy
