|
|
Hi all,
My 940 was rebooting randomly every 2-3 days. To be honest it's never been very stable. Every upgrade ususally causes a few freezes requiring some interverntion to sort it out. Following advice from tomtom I have reloaded everything. Now it reboots everytime I turn it on. The latest advice from tomtom is that I need to move my documents from drive d to c!!!! I have done a trawl through the forum and it seems this problem is not curable. Do I try to get it repaired or does anyone have some better advice?

My 520 would reboot just after switching on and then be ok until I turned it off / on the next time.
In the end I cured it by doing a chkdsk and a defrag of the internal tomtom drive and the memory card I was using.
It's been fine since (but I regularly do a quick defrag of it just in case). |

Check in the Map Folder for a file called mapsettings.cfg. If it is there delete it (or move it to the PC) and reboot. See if that works. The TomTom will regenerate the file but you'll loose any user settings.

Does it have a proper hard drive or solid state (flash) drive? |

Both of your suggested actions were part of the input from tomtom as part of fixing my original issues. I can try both again to see if it will clear this latest issue. Has anyone actually cured this? |

Do NOT Defrag solid state drives or SD Cards. There is no point as they don't work in the same manner as proper hard drives with spinning platters.
ChkDsk is ok but defragging solid state media like SD cards and USB thumb drives will reduce their useful life much quicker than standard useage. |

Removing the mapsettings.cfg file usually cures the rebooting issues...
Have you tried ClearFlash or a reset? See AndyVaughans 5 fixes here |

Will try the 5 fixes. However it was a backup and restore which got me to where I am now. |

One fix I find that works more often than not is to "Operate My Go" in TomTom Home. Then add or edit a favourite exit properly. Works for me

I just hit this, while on a driving holiday in France - needless to say, most frustrating.
It appears to be because the internal TomTom drive / flash gets corrupt somehow. In my case I was just following a route, and then it read out some instructions in dalek speak (it was maxing out its processor so couldn't synthesise speech right), and then it crashed, and went into an endless series of reboots. I tried all the usual things, but nothing helped.
I fixed it in the end by:
1. Connect to computer and backup everything off the TomTom
2. Format the drive - as FAT32, NOT quick format
3. Use TomTom Home and let it re-install everything except the map (took two updates for the application). Note you have to explicitly download the computer voices in TTH, by going to the Voices part and choosing the computer voices, if you want them.
4. Copied back the map from backup (it is huge to download, and in my case the map was not corrupt)
5. Set all my preferences and favorites up again
Note - in case you didn't know, you should save all your favorites into a new POI, so that when (not if, when) TT lose all your favorites, you can easily set them up again, by Add Favorite, and choosing each POI in turn.
Basically TT suck really badly, and are gradually going downhill. NEVER buy a TomTom again - they are going from bad to worse to absolutely dreadful. |

The re-booting COULD be down to the internal memory beginning to fail.
It might be worth trying copying EVERYTHING (i.e. the Navcore system files too) onto an SD card and letting the unit boot from there instead (it will do so automatically if it sees the system files on the SD), but probably safest to delete everything from the internal just to make sure it doesn't try to access anything from there. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

@M8TJT.... You shouldn't jump to conclusions. How do you know that 111rdw isn't going to describe it exactly as it is? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
