|
|
I got a Tomtom GO 730 a few days ago. I have downloaded the Home software and I'm trying to check if I have the latest maps and take advantage of the latest maps guarantee.
It seems I do not have the latest maps because there's a little box at the top of the Home front page telling me I don't.
Now I guess that to get the latest maps I have to "activate" my device by clicking on "Use my activation code". Again, I'm led to believe I get this code by entering a product code (not sure where...). But I can't even find the product code. There is no cars in the box, no sticker, nothing. Can anyone please advise? Thanks. |

TomTom carefully hide the link to the Latest Map Guarantee, presumably in the hope people won't find it!
In HOME, click on "Tools", then "Use Latest Map Guarantee".
Come back if you have any problems and someone will be able to help.
Don't forget to back up your device using Windows Explorer first. _________________ Anita

Thanks.
I have just followed the instructions and downloaded the latest map...and I am told there is not enough memory, I need to free 45 mb.
I am guessing now that I'll have to get an SD card? |

You have options.
The best in my opinion would indeed getting a reliable FOUR gig sdhc (not sd) card and install the new map there.
Steps I would take:
1. Make a complete Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents.
2. Buy the card and insert into the unit. Connect the unit to the computer. NOT Home.
3. Copy the existing specific map folder (Western_Europe or whatever) to the card from your backup in step 1.
4. Start Home and when asked what to select, choose the external card.
5. In Home, Add maps, install the newly downloaded map to the card.
Another option is to go to where the newly downloaded map is. You'll find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\
Look at the contents using WinRar and REMOVE from the file any cspeechXX.dat files (where XX = a country code) for any country you never plan to use the unit when driving. THese .dat files are used for Voice Recognition.
Now, with the compressed .cab file reduced in size, it'll probably install on the internal unit without the need for a card.
But I think using a sdhc card is still much easier and efficient. _________________ David |

Thanks. I freed up space by deleting Dutch languages etc and have squeezed the new map on. Thanks.
However, there is still the option to "use my activation code". What is that and how do I get it? Will it open up other options for me?
As things stand, I cannot use the "Operate my Go" facility or send stuff from Google maps to my TT. I just get the message "This functionality is not yet supported for your combination of navigation device, your device's application version and your computer;s operating system" (which is Vista). |

Try running Home in XP compatible mode and see if that helps. _________________ David |

Thanks, can you explain how I would do that?
Another thing to note is I have to right click Home and "run as administrator" on my PC. |

I have installed Home on a laptop running XP, connected the Go to it...and still getting the same error. Have reset the Go, to no avail.
Not impressed with my new device so far...indeed, not really a great leap on from the 4 year old One it is replacing. The promised 5 hour battery life turns out to be about 2 hours in reality too... |

On a couple of the outstanding questions....
"use my activation code"
Activation codes, Product codes etc. were TomTom's OLD anti-piracy system to lock a new map to your hardware.
They don't use that system any more, but I assume the functionality has been left in Home to allow for old maps to be re-used.
It doesn't give you any extra goodies unfortunately!
"This functionality is not yet supported for your combination of navigation device, your device's application version and your computer's operating system"
This is often seen after a new software version is released, as it takes a few days for TomTom to develop the support files that Home needs to run the emulator.
However, that file *is* available for the most recent official software for the Go730. I'm also pretty sure it normally works fine on Vista.
Can you tell us the software and map versions that are now on the Go? (Instructions to find them HERE |

There's your problem then.
The latest official release of software for the Go x20 and x30 ranges is v8.351
v8.393 was only ever intended for the TomTom "Work" system, not ordinary Go's.
Either you've downloaded it from a forum link, or there was apparently a small number of people who got it offered to them by Home by mistake.
Do you have a backup of the system as it was "out of the box"?
If so, go back to that and then re-install just the latest map.
If not, we can advise on a link to download the correct software.
The "Operate my Go" emulator in Home should then work. |

Thanks Andy-P.
Unfortunately I don't have a backup of it as it was out of the box
Can you please advise where to get the appropriate OS / how to install?
Much appreciated. |

Make a complete Explorer backup of your unit's contents.
Go here to get 8.351 and use WinRar to extract the contents to the unit, overwriting as necessary. _________________ David |
