Yeah, no mapshare updates for the North_America 845 map, either. _________________ David |

It's stopped reporting my map is 20 weeks out of date and now says it's up to date and there are 0 updates available.
Have TT finally got their maps fully up to date? |

Nice one Mike.
Mine too says my map is up to date. It also says Nil mapshare corrections in use, NOT "available" - I don't download, so maybe that's significant, but I do a few local ones (every time, including yesterday, from three devices - XL Live, GO520 Internal and SD Card) for my own convenience (I do upload them for your convenience).
I see they've reinstated the GBP19.95 price for their cameras. _________________ Dennis

I've made note about the download size of each map:
Western and Central Europe 2GB V840.2562 (1850 Mb download size)
Western and Central Europe 2GB V845.2645 (1758 Mb download size)
you'll notice that the newer version is 92 MB smaller!
When I downloaded the new map Western and Central Europe 2GB V845.2645 I got the following message:
There is not enough free space on your device to add the item. You need to remove 424 Kb
OK, that's a bit strange as the new version is a massive 92Mb smaller, yet the installation process is worried about such a small amount of space as 424 Kb!
No problem I thought, I copied the backup that I'd made just before onto a new 4 Gb SD card and tried the installation process again. Once again I got the error message about 424 Kb, so I retried and then got an update error message. However when I went to try the installation/update yet again, there was no maps to update and the TomTom 730 reports that it has version V845.2645 maps installed.
I replaced the new MapSettings.cfg file with the latest backup version and operated the TomTom 730 via TomTom Home.
I now think that I have V845.2645 on the TomTom 730 (because that is what it reports) and it is now apparently working OK.

I thought it was smaller but i've put if down there being less road about after the recent cold weather caused all those pot holes. My road looks like it's been shelled...
Even though it was a smaller update i noticed the free space went down from just over 100 Mb to ~75 Mb. I'll check again later.
This ties in nicely with a question i was thinking of asking anyway.
Does the amount of free space on the unit affect the units operation?
Would it be better to add a blank SD card to the unit (increase space) or would it be better to move the data to a 4Gb SD Card? |

Sorry, I don't know. However I presume that a minimum amount of free space is needed for the unit to perform calculations in order for it to work.

I first tried to insert a blank 4 Gb SD card into the 730 and it completely ignored it, the unit used the internal memory. As I was only updating the maps, I thought I should copy everything to the SD Card to emulate the internal memory and then update the SD whilst in the TomTom. When conected to the PC, TomTom Home detected the SD card and asked if I wanted to use the internal memory or the SD card.

Just a word of warning, Robert, in case you haven't read about it in the forum.
With a recent update Home ignored your selection of internal or SD card and updated both! If you want to make sure the update is written to the card it's safer to use a card reader instead of the device. As long as you also have the application on the card Home treats it as if a device was connected. _________________ Anita

One of these day, TT will get it right!!!
Updated mine on Tuesday night, and even after a re-boot, it spent most of the trip to Shepshed trying to convince me to take a Ferry!!!
However, the trip back was less eventful!!!! _________________ XL LIVE IQ Routes (Europe)

I've had a response back from Tomtom regarding the lack of Mapshare updates
Quote: | This is currently under investigation by the mapping team and they hope to have this resolved in the near future. |
No idea of time scales though but at least they are aware of the problem. |

Last time i downloaded a new map my initial thought was all my MapShare Corrections were still on the map. However they soon disappeared. I suspect this was when i did the next MapShare update.
Currently my MapShare Corrections still seem to stand so i'm wondering if they'll disappear when the MapShare updates start to flow... |

PaulB2005 wrote: | Does the amount of free space on the unit affect the units operation? | With the older models it was reckoned that 2MB was all that was needed for calculations and Route storage.
IIRC the symptoms of low memory storage was Unable to calculate Route and/or Rebooting while en-route. (This is probably a different 'challenge' that some recent models are having with Rebooting.) _________________ Richard

SpikeyMikey wrote: | Why does a map download of 2GB take 4 hour(ish)?
I've reset TT and laptop, I've tried disabling anti-virus and firewall, I've checked network settings but nothing less than 4 hours.
Maybe it's my BB speed or TT servers but I tried about 4 times yesterday and had to abort the download to go out, and here I am doing it again today
Am I the only one? |
No !!
Mine always takes around 8-9 hours. I can only get 512Kbps out here in wildest Cheshire. I remove Kate (TTS) voice to give me enough room and let it run overnight. In the morning I delete one or more of the non-English cspeech_xx.DAT files and copy back Kate and my mapsettings. It worked fine after this. _________________ Phil |

Is that reported directly on the device or vie TT Home? if its the latter check again on the device as Home is well known for miss reporting the version numbers.
As for the extra space required for installation as I understand it is something to do with the unzipping process, the easy way around this is to unzip the map file set and the .meta.dct to a folder on the PC then copy it it to where you want it using Windows Explorer - Far more reliable - Mike |

Looks like mapshare is up and working again as I have just downloaded some updates. It also looks like all your previous corrections are stored as well as I have just checked a few local ones and they are still there. |
