Messing about with my TomTom Start today, and found that it allows the published SDK menus for the GO. I had been messing about a fair bit though
for a few hours so maybe I tripped it into allowing it? I am not sure.

It is certainly displaying POI on the map, and it surprised me to discover that the warning sounds are built into it. Some of the icons are missing for certain menu items, but a lot of them are there.

To be honest I am wondering what this can not do at the moment that a One can ?!?

Does TomTom allow this? Does PGPSW allow this type of talk? All I have done is added a text file to my tomtom so it allows more menus which I believe they allow due to their GPL licence. Not quite sure though so though I should check.

Quick edit to warn anyone thinking of doing the same, make a backup using explorer as well before you mess about with SDK stuff.

Edit, any tests anyone wants me to do on it? I haven't got the cams as I got mine from tomtom, but I have supermarkets on it and am going for a drive in a bit.

Anything missing from the standard "start" that you want me to try and do?

We don't allow such discussions we actually welcome them!

Modifying a unit in the way you have done isn't wrong in any way, so please keep up the good work, can you get the device to Warn when near POI option to appear as this will be a very decent addition to the device, if I had one of these modifying the menu would have been the first thing I would have tried Cool

If its got HelpMe or MapShare you can expect these to be missing when running a custom menu like on all the other devices, but it would be interesting to know if you can get other functions working over and above those supplied with the standard menu - Mike

The warn when near poi menu is there via manage poi (add poi, warn when near, delete poi, edit poi, add poi category and delete poi category), it came up with 300yrd as a default so I left it at that. Then it offered me a sound file to choose from which surprised me as the bells and horn sounds are already on it.

Can also show and hide poi.

options / manage maps comes up with "download free map corrections" so that is mapshare. I will test that out now by removing my mapshares and enabling them....

Well I removed my mapshares. Disconnected the tomtom start, shut down home and reconnected the tomtom so it booted home again.

It offered me mapshare, but what surprised me was it only downloaded 670 mapshares. There was 1460 ish on there before I did the removal.

Have no idea where "Help Me" would be hidden.

Tested to see if I can set walking routes, and it can (though it misses the alley by my house).

Not sure what else to test. Used the menu (complete) from the open tomtom wiki.

What about OGG audio files for the POI warnings does it support these do you know? As we use the OGG audio for spoken alerts when installing the Speed Camera Database from this site, it would be very interesting to know if these actually work - Mike

I down loaded "pocketgps_uk_sc.ogg" and that one came up on the list. When I told it to choose that one t played it "ping pong speed camera".

OK, went for a drive and it did alert me when I got within 300 yrds of the local supermarket with a nice bugle sound.

Traffic locks it up, is this normal on a unit that has the traffic icon and no RDS unit attached?

I can see no way to actually alter your own maps on it (own mapshare corrections) although I think I can do this via the button that "start" will place on the map for you.

I just told it to tell alert when near a dentist within 5000 yds as there is one up the road, tested it and it worked.
Then renamed SDKRegistry to SDKRegistryOff (thought it was nicer to rename rather than uninstall).

Re booted the "START" back into the original menu and sure enough when I took it to the window so it could get its location the warning sound alerted me.

So. Maybe I/We can make a menu just for people to set up warnings for the GPS, maybe tell it no to toll roads if they wish, maybe add the menu for altering it between shortest walking ect. And anything else that they might want to change the main operation of the tomtom start to do? Then they could do the rename of the folder to make it boot back tot he normal menu. This way it would be just like a normal "start", just with warnings turned on for various poi.

mmm.

Hang on. There is obviously a switch altering somewhere on the "start" to make it know to sound the warning. mmm. time to search.

Or/And.

Make a menu that is a bit more like the tomtom one that they can keep on always?

EDIT Please ignore this script. I am only leaving it up in case someone has started already. I have discovered something even better.

Right, lets try a simple test see if this is working on other peoples "TomTom Start". The following will ONLY allow you to access the POI manager. From there you can add a warning sound to any POI you have added.

Before you do this, back up everything.
Also, understand that you will be creating a folder called SDKRegistry (caps are important) on your tomtom.
After you have set up the warnings, you will want to rename the folder SDKRegistry to something else. such as SDKRegistryOFF so that you can ignore it and boot back into the old menu.

Here goes...

Make a folder called SDKRegistry on your tomtom.
Open notepad and enter the following (cut n paste it if you like)...

MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_GPS_POSITION|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1|Main Menu 1 of 1|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_POI|

When you save this, it is important not to save it as "Text Documents (*.txt) and instead save it as "All Files".
Save As TomTom.mnu inside the folder SDKRegistry on your tomtom Start.

To undo it, all you need to do is rename the folder to something else like SDKRegistryOFF

If this works on other peoples Starts I will try to set out a menu system that is a bit more functional but only containing the bits a Start can use and missing out the wasted stuff.

Sorry to triple post Sad but I do not want people to get confused over these...

This is my version two.

This will give you four new icons on your main menu - "Manage POIs", "Change Route", "Map Colours" and "Day/Night"on top of the original icons "Plan Route" and "Browse Map".

Inside the manage POIs you can add warnings amongst other things.

Clicking "DONE" or "SELECT" on this screen will take you the the normal "options" menu. I am pleased with how this has turned out because it means you have all the old functions, just with the added "Manage POIs". Although I could do with changing those buttons to "options" at some point.

The quickest option back to the driving screen seems to be to click done twice. (edit, actually clicking "done" twice is quicker).

That is a bit messy, I will see if I can make that better.

for the time being... (and remember to back everything up with explorer)

This is the TomTom.mnu

MENUBLOCK|BLOCK_MAIN|BTM_GPS_POSITION|
MENUPAGE|TASK_PAGE1| Menu - Click "DONE or "SELECT" For OPTIONS|
MENUITEM|TASK_NAVIGATE_TO|
MENUITEM|TASK_MENU_FIND_ALTERNATIVES|
MENUITEM|TASK_SHOW_MAP|
MENUITEM|TASK_SET_COLOR_SCHEMES|
MENUITEM|TASK_SWITCH_NIGHTVIEW|
MENUITEM|TASK_MAINTAIN_POI|

save as TomTom.mnu (not as a text file, but All files) in a folder called SDKRegistry on your tomtom. As before renaming or deleting SDKRegistry will flip your START back to normal.

It is a long way from beautiful, but it works ok here.

Thanks.

It still needs tidying up, and I should add the option to show POI, as well as the "show route" and it looks like it can do itinerary plus a few other bits and bobs.

But the main thing I think, for here at least, was to enable warning sounds.

We can live in hope that Tomtom will turn this function on as it is certainly built in and capable. It is just a matter of turning the option on.

My guess is the only reason it is not is they want some clear air between the functions of the "One" and the "Start".

I would love to try out the RDS TMC stuff, at the moment it just locks up the "start". If anyone around the Midlands is brave enough to let me try my start on their RDS TMC then give me a shout.

At the moment I am wading through them, trying to find which ones do not work and which ones are not that useful so they can be eliminated.

I wonder if you know how to change the "Done" and "Select" buttons to read something else like "options" and "advanced".

Did a complete reinstall on my start last night to check as best as I could that it should work fine when others do it and it wasn't just a one off.

Amazes me the thing has been out so long and no one has done this stuff yet.

I have only had a play around for 10 minutes with a Start while eating a Cantonese Meal in London and didn't have the Laptop with me so I haven't tried anything with that device.
The menu list above is one extracted from a device running Navcore 6 from quite a while ago and screen shot was from a planned April first joke that I had lined up for last year - Watching Sky News one the way to work using a TomTom linked to a mobile phones HSDPA data connection and Bluetooth! - Mike

The following work seem to work ok, a few others did but were repeated, some others were un supported. Still working my way through the list. When I have done I will create a more logical better set out menu as this is "just a test of functions menu".
