I'm not certain whether it's the OLED scrren or the finish of the plastic covering, but one or both is getting early complaints from users in sunny locales.

Plastic??? I think you mean glass, it certainly doesnt feel like plastic...
I had my hands on one yesterday and virtually had to prise Lutz's fingers apart to return it to it's rightful owner. I cant comment on the performance outside, but alongside a standard resistive device and the iPhone the OLED screen of the Nexus far and away outshine (groan) the others.

Quite right, it is glass. I don't know if it's the same very tough Gorilla glass that's on the Droid. I had just finished putting a screen protector on my Dakota and had plastic on the brain.

Yes, I have a 7" screen fitted in my Mazda 4x4 double cab pickup truck linked to 2 reversing cameras, one on the back of the truck the other on the back of the caravan, switchable between both. There is no where on the dash the monitor can be fitted without obstructing switches controls etc. On the top of the dash it blocks out to much of your forward vision through the screen.
The only place I found was to mount it from the front of the roof above the rear view mirror.

| Why is the lifetime of a PND expected to be so ridiculously short 2 to 5 years. There is not going to be a massive increase in the number of roads they wont fit in the units memory so there should be no reason they could not be kept up to date indefinitely. Or is this just another ploy like Microsoft use by changing file formats in Office applications to make older versions redundant and force people to by new versions. |

That is about the average for small electronic items. Design moves on, batteries fail, and the majority of users will have changed devices, upgraded etc within that timeframe.
Whilst TT are to be applauded for at least supporting older devices, consider that many SatNav manufacturers abandon older devices with no software or map updates after a couple of years.

Here's the latest I've seen:
The Apple tablet is using an ARM cpu, running on an iPhone kernal. Refered to as the "iPhone on steroids" from one source.
The same source offers that the reason no OS upgrade has been made available yet for the iPhone is there's too many giveaways to the tablets functions since both will use the updated OS.

I don't see any difference in the tom tom news on map updates if they are not free!! I can still buy maps for my old 300 so therefore I've had lifetime updates! As long as I pay, looks like they are just going to charge you upfront!!  |
