Have to admit to knowing nothing about this...
But today I thought I'd add some photos of a recent trip to Google Earth as I'd uploaded my saved gpx file route on to it and there wasn't any photos of the bit where I finished, not having done this before I found out you need to use something called Panoramio, and you need to map your photos first on there, problem was that the route was in the middle of nowhere in Morocco and trying to find my end point in panoramio was proving difficult, apparently I cant open my gpx file on there to find the points, so went on to the forum for help and was told that you can syncronize the data from the photos to the data from the gpx/route information? Ok, great ... No, tried 3 different programs to try and do this and couldn't get any of them to work, there seemed to be a problem with the gpx files, messages coming up saying 'no trackpoints found', or '0' for gpx file information.
So, I'm confused, isn't every point recorded on the Satmap as I'm moving a trackpoint, wouldn't the fact that as I stopped at a particular point to take a photo there would be quite a few track points so it should be easy to match up those dates/times with the info in my photos?
Am I missing something? Is there some setting I'm supposed to do on the Satmap before recording my travels - I've been through the menus but can't see anything obvious?
Would I need to do something on the Satmap unit everytime I stop to take a photo? - Bit of a pain as the unit gets put in my pack as most of my trips are bike trips so it's not readily to hand?
Anyway, if someone knows how to do this - sync gpx and photo data, please tell me in simple easy to follow instructions, I've spent far too long trawling through web pages and downloading software and trying this and trying that today that's it's given me a headache ...
Thanks if you've read this far |

Hang on, I've just noticed this is possible in the new satsync software, tried it but it didn't work, but looking through the user guide it seems that if you reset your trip data it won't work, but surely if on a multiday trip where I want to reset the satmap everyday to record a new route then it's not going to be possible to use this facility when I get home? So, would I need to Geo-Tag my photos at the end of each day, which isn't possible? or do I set the satmap to something else, surely I need to reset at the bigginning of everyday to record the new route? |

Is the gpx file you are trying to use the one created when you convert track to trail in the satmap? I use this file (that gets created at the same time as a .map file of the same name during a "convert track to trail") in conjunction with geotagging software and iPhoto on a Mac, which results in successful display of the photos on google maps within iPhoto. |

I haven't used Panoramio but if it is not recognising your track points it may be because you are exporting your gpx file as Route Points instead of Track Points, you can change this setting in satsync / settings / export click export my map files as gpx files then underneath click GPX tracks and see if that works.
In regards to using the satsync built in geotagging I have only used this a couple of times but on one occassion I converted the trail to track and then reset the data and then tried geotagging and it worked. I've not exhaustively tested it as I say but could be worth trying it out. I think the point is that if you reset without saving the data then there is obviously nothing to match up to.
I wonder if anyone else has used this feature yet. |

I happen to have some photos in my camera and and a route as a raw file that I had saved so I downloaded the photos and tried out the geotagging. I succesfully geocoded 13 out of the 18 photos. So it will geocode from a saved route, but why it didn't the other's I don't know. I will look through the gpx file and check the recorded times of the track point. |

It looks like the software compares the HH:MM (Hours:Minutes) time stamp on the photo with the HH:MM of the track points in the gpx file.
If there was a match on the HH:MM then it further considers the SS (seconds) e.g. a photo with 10:47:07 HH:MM:SS had a track point in the GPX file of 10:47:21 and the photo was geocoded.
However if there is no match on the HH:MM e.g a photo time stamp of 10:46:03 did not have a gpx track point starting 10:46 so it was not geocoded. The track points either side of this time were 10:44:28 and 10:47:21 so there was no match. Normally the track points are recorded every 2-3 seconds but there were occassions where there were now track logs for over 1 minute, why this was the case I don't know. Perhaps the A10 was in the case and couldn't pick up a satellite, they were also photos taken at points where I had been stood still for a while perhaps the track points stop recording if you are in a stationery position?
Any way the good news is that despite some missed photos you can save your gpx files over a multi day trip and still geocode them. |

Just thought I'd also share this.. Having been able to tag most of my photos but not all I needed to be able to tag the remaining few.
I use Picassa from google (free) and this can show your geotagged photos and also geotag them using the "Places" pane in the software, I was able to see where the photos that had been tagged by satsync were and easily identify the locations of the photos that were missed and then tag them within a couple clicks.

Although it isn't documented yet I'd thought I'd share with you that it is now possible in 1.42 of satsync just released to export your raw_gpx file and save it in the same folder as the photos that you want to geocode.
So, you can now do your multiday trips, at the end of each one you can convert trail to track at which point you will generate a raw gpx file. When you return you export this file to the picture folder where it will be safetly stored until you get around to downloading the photos from your camera. So you can delete the raw file from the satmap if you need to in the meantime.
You will still need to connect the satmap to the computer to launch the geocoding option in sat map.
Also, earlier along in the post I mentioned that the some photos I tested had not been geocoded, this has also been fixed in 1.42, I retested the same photos with the gpx file and all photos were coded, and quite acurately as well.
I have raised the question about making it possible to geocode from POI's and satmap are looking at this. |
