Hi,
has anybody tried the tomtom maps of the middle east, specifically Abu Dhabi/Dubai (UAE)?
I know the roads over there are ever changing but I am just wondering if the maps are any good as I may be moving over there soon.
Cheers |

The last time I looked Dubai wasn't available.
18 months ago I borrowed a PDA with iGo8 Dudai mapping and that seemed accurate.

yeh, on the tomtom website is the middle east maps which says it has 99% coverage of the UAE but the files is only 20Mb which makes me think it is not extremely detailed.

I have this map. I was working in Dubai last year and refering to my knowledge of the area the map for Dubai looks good. I certainly wish it was available when I was out there. As you stated the main problem is the roads are continuously changing.
I cannot comment on Abu Dhabi as I have never been there, but looking on the Tomtom map the map is detailed to side street level. _________________ -------------------------

Was there any update on this? Were there any suitable maps?
I lived in Abu Dhabi until 18 months ago. Many roads are changing and the whole place is expanding. Dubai has changed loads too, so maps only a few months old would be out of date. One possible explanation for the small maps may be lack of populated areas. Apart from the big cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi there are miles of nothing but desert and a few small towns unlike densely the populated UK. |

Been in Dubai and Abu Dhabi last October with the then new maps.
In general the map was very good. Sometimes the construction in Dubai is faster then the map and also sometimes I noticed roads (esp. slip-roads to motorways) that are driveable in the map, but are still under construction. Also it seems to me that the more you are away from the big cities the less is the map-quality.
POIs are like with the Western-European map, some are correct...but a lot of them are totally displaced or doubled. For example the the biggest Mall of the world, Mall of Dubai, is somewhere in the outskirts regarding to the map.
We went to the F1 to Abu Dhabi and the whole area where the Grand Prix took place was not covered. They built a new motorway that shortens the way from Dubai to Abu Dhabi by 20 minutes as it is not going through the city, but via Yas Island and Sasdiyat Island, but the map didn't know any road on these two islands.
But for getting around and finding place and addresses it's ok. We have some friends living down there and the TT navigated us to them without problems.
I will go down to Dubai over Easter half term and check then again if something has changed with the new maps then.
Not to Abu Dhabi then, but to Qatar to watch the motoGP
