Great of TomTom to email me my "Special Gift" of an £8 voucher to spend as I wish.
And great of TomTom to email me simultaneously with the news that the latest maps are out.
I can use my voucher to get £60sworth of new Western Europe map for a mere £52!
I didn't bother.
The voucher expired on December 14th.
Wonderful of TomTom to email me today to say there's now 30% off the map.
So it's now £46.
This really is sophisticated Public Relations and doubtless accounts for the record profits TomTom is making.
As for all those delighted at having spent £52 with their lovely gift voucher instead of £46 without it, hey: it's the thought that counts.
Well. If you can figure out what kind of corporate thought process (if any) TomTom might have.

Think yourself lucky!
I have six current email addresses for TT devices, so I've had that many times £8, that many reminders to spend the £8 twice or three times over, that many new maps out now, that many twice or three times over reminding me about the new maps and the same for the "up to" 30% off maps offers. Those include maps which won't work on two devices. These statistics may be a little inaccurate - I'm punch drunk from them all! _________________ Dennis

I only have 2 email addresses for my TomToms and the emails I have been receiving have been doing my head in , so you getting 3 x that amount must have been TERRIBLE .
I wonder how many people actually took TomTom up on their £ 8 freebie and used it ? _________________ Keith

The really sad thing is of the six addresses, two are for devices I no longer have (temporarily, my ISP has stopped changes to my email addresses so I can't dump them), two are for devices for which I already do have the latest maps (XL Live with Map Update Service and refurb 520 with Latest Map Guarantee) and the other two are running Navcore 6 and TTN6 so who wants new maps anyway!!! _________________ Dennis

I get emails from TomTom for accounts I changed the email address from a long time ago, whilst those accounts no longer exist on TomTom, the marketing have not deleted them from their database. If only I could enter each of the codes against the same item and get it for free! _________________ Drivelux |

Does anyone know what the "Improving GPS" section of that Christmas email was about?
I haven't managed to get Home to install any kind of update. Is it a software update for the device, or something else?
And, yes, I get three copies of each missive! |

I clicked this and all it did was update the Tomtom software to the latest version. Not sure if the latest version had 'improved GPS' but I seem to remember that one of the recent versions did give GPS problems. _________________ Tomtom Go520, App 8.010, Map UK&ROI 810.1870 |

If you're refering to v8.371, yes it does. It has updated GPS firmware which 'should bring significant GPS performance improvements'. |

Despite it being fashionable on this forum to ridicule TomTom for their suspect marketing, not-to-perfect customer service and hardware issues (the failure of the hands-free being my greatest regret)...
...they have hands down, the best stand alone Sat Nav product, the best looking and operating graphics, and the most customisable 'desktop' of any of their competitors - by a long way.
That explains why, despite a lot of carping, many of the most experienced users on here will not be looking elsewhere come their next purchase. _________________ TT Go 920T

No they don't. (My opinion) Try IGO for user interface customisation etc. |

|

I have just checked my map and TomTom Home tells me it is seven quarterly upgrades behind. So, for £9.95 a quarter I could be quids in and up to date, too, allegedly. Could I use my £8 voucher against this offer, I wonder?
My real question, however, is whether the maps are worth updating? Will it sort out the mess that is the high-tech Stockley Park, the frozen-in Luton Airport and all the other places we have sent in as map corrections months ago and still not implemented.
Also, the problems with the TomTom server fills me with dread. Can you trust them with a 2Gb download?
Happy holidays

People generally stick with the brand they start with in my experience. I have always used Garmin and while they are not perfect I certainly wouldn't say that TomTom are miles ahead of the competition.
I agree they have some excellent features most notably IQ Routes and HD traffic (when it works) and a very customisable GUI. Not so sure about the actual screen graphics etc to be honest.
I have toyed with the idea of buying one several times myself, certainly one of the live device, but the Home software, Teleatlas maps and general brown trousers time at any map or firmware update that you hear about time and time again keeps my money with Garmin. |

Thanks for this. My 930 currently has 8.351. Is this the latest for this device? If not, is there any way I can force an update to 8.371 as Home isn't interested when I do an "Update Device"? |
