I'm thinking of buying a TomTom 550.
Can anyone kindly advise me on how well the Voice Command and Control function works, and to what extent using this function when driving allows hands free operation?
Thank you. _________________ TomTom 550, App 9.026, Apple iMAC Safari 5.0.1 |

It covers more functions that on the x40 range (v9 software rather than v8, the hardware is the same) but it still depends on pressing the voice command button on the screen or using the button on the remote. The voice command is not permanently activated and requires a remote control button or screen press to start.
My personal opinion is that it is far quicker to use buttons to use a command than the press voice button, give a voice command, then hear the spoken response "xxx is this what you require" then you have to respond with the voice command "yes" or "no". _________________ Drivelux |

I don't have a 550, so things might have improved, but I found the voice control/command on a 940 to be a joke.
It's not so much how well the voice recognition works (although I did find myself shouting at it a lot!) but that you need to tap the screen so many times anyway, you might as well not have bothered with the voice control bit. |

My kids find it quite funny when I have tried to use it in the car, for five minutes or so they are kept amused after that they want to know why I am still messing around talking to something that doesn't understand (they are 9 and 12 by the way) - Perhaps its my Northern accent but in use its a waste of time, a few prods with the finger at the screen will outperform the ASR (Avdanced Voice Recognition) every time without fail - Don't go for a unit just on this basis or you will be disapointed - Mike |

You forgot to mention how funny they find it to shout out "NO" when TT asks you to confirm what you've said.
Fails to amuse me everytime! |
