|

TomTom have updated the App description in the Appstore to add support for the iPod Touch and iPhone 2G.
With the release of v1.2 of TomTom's iPhone app, Touch and iPhone 2G users can now install the app.
As the Touch and 2G iPhone lack a GPS receiver the app will not provide location or turn-by-turn guidance unless used with the TomTom car kit.
This is great news for owners who want to add turn-by-turn guidance to their devices without buying a 3G or 3GS iPhone but despite earlier assurances that the same car kit would support all models, TomTom are now listing a separate car kit for the Touch.
The iPod Touch car kit is listed as coming soon and is prices at £79.95 here.

TomTom did confirm today that a different car kit will be needed for the iPod. They didn't clarify whether it will replace the current dock for the 3G and GS or be a separate solution altogether. But TomTom has indicated details would be available very soon.
Touch car kit price to be $100 in the US _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr.

Hi there,
Does anyone know if this cradle only work with the Tomtom app or will others be usable say, Navigon or Sygic?
Thanks in advance.

As I understand it, it is a requirement of Apple approval that it is able to function with any GPS app so it should work fine with other GPS apps. _________________ Darren Griffin |

That's great.
I look forward to seeing this new kit for the ipod, any idea when they are hoping to release to the public?

I'm seeking clarification as to whether the existing iPhone car kit will function with a Touch.
It may be that the Touch car kit has been made available as an option because lacking the hands-free it is cheaper but that either would work if you already owned one.
I'll update the thread as soon as I know. _________________ Darren Griffin |

TomTom is a bit unclear on their app working with other available car kits such as Magellan's. Their indication this morning is that the TT kit would be required to work, leaving the impression that other mounts would not. Can you get any clarification Darren? _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

AIUI Apple will not allow them to lock the cradle to their app but that may not preclude them from locking their 'app' to the cradle.
But I shall attempt to seek clarification. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Am I missing something here, is there any reason why the Touch kit is £79 where as the iPhone is £99. Is the Touch mount compatible with the iPhone.
It just seems strange, I'd expected similar mounts at similar prices, no technical reason why there should be any difference? |

The Touch cradle lacks the hands-free functions but I agree that it's hard to explain the difference in price for this as the speaker is still present _________________ Darren Griffin |

Perhaps the touch version doesn't need Bluetooth for the audio connection which would reduce the component count, maybe the Touch audio is available from the Sync socket?? - Mike |

That would make sense, Bluetooth wasn't even present in the original iPod Touch. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Since I'm not an Apple kind of guy, I don't know why the distinction of "compatible with iPod Touch ver.2" for Magellan mobile dock and whether the same applies to TomTom's. I assume there are physical and/or connector differences between the original touch and version 2? _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

The connector is the same across all iPhone/Touch devices. There was a change to charge pins between 2G and 3G/3GS devices.
As for the iPod, there were some hardware specification differences between Touch ver.1 and ver.2. Aside from minor hardware tweaks the most notable addition was Bluetooth added with ver.2 but only enabled with OS3.0.
Perhaps Magellan rely on Bluetooth for some features of their cradle? _________________ Darren Griffin |
