Currently I have MS Autoroute 2006 - which has served me well, but with 4+ year old maps, it is time for an update.
Please can someone advise which is the best PC based routing software out there?
Criteria is that it must run on XP and Vista. Have the maps saved on the hard disk (no carrying CDs, DVDs or going on-line). Detailed Europe Maps with an option to buy other maps around the globe (these maps could be downloaded, but saved on the hard disk). Allow import of POIs. Demonstratable licence as work requires all software on work's PCs to prove that you have the right to use any software. Allow multiple installs on at least 3-4 PCs and finally be easy to use.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you thought about Google Earth?
You can save routes and map to hard drive or print out driving directions and, by zooming in to all or several parts of the route, print the map/s.
I often check this way before setting up my Sat Nav. instead of using MS Autoroute 2007. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Thanks for this, but Google Earth requires some form of connectivity when on the road, which may prove difficult in deppest darkest Wales. _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

I hope somebody comes up with something as I too wish there were a replacement for MS Autoroute which I understand is no longer going to be updated.
Incidentally, for what it's worth, there's a 2007 Autoroute still available - I nearly gave mine away when I got the new PC a month or so ago, but when I went into PCWorld for a 2009 version, discovered the latest (and last) was 2007. Heartbroken, really useful program, I use it probably every day. _________________ Dennis

The only other route planner I know of is the AA version.
But again I don't think they have done a 2009 version.
Can be found HERE (opens in a new window). |

With a very short glance, I can't see if it will import pushpins? I import a whole load of pushpins then plan a route to see what pushpins are along the route. For example download the pgpsw POI of say Travelodges and Premier Inns, then plan a route to Scotland and see which Travelodges and Premier Inns are along the route. _________________ Dennis

The latest MS offering is MapPoint 2009 dont ask the price.
Not in the same category but I went on a run with a trucker using Garmin Mobile. That looked impressive on the 15" display.
Laptop GPS World is a good knowledge base. Be mindful that some of the solutions are USA only.
@Simon, I guess there shouldn't be too many places when a cell signal is unavailable? |

Can be found for cheaper on flea-bay, Academic version. I also see that MS do a 60 day free trial, as they say, big 3 part download. |

Dennis, it appears that all is not lost! Have a look at this. No hint of cost and the eval version lasts for 60 days, but you can test the free trial on W7, at least until you find out how to run AR2007 under W7. I wonder if AR2010 will run under XP?
Review here
Downloading now, but much larger than 2006 which fitted on 2 CDs. Total download is 2.15GB. _________________ Jock

However, ...... (isn't there always one), I've found that it will only let me run it once as a trial. The second time of running it, I'm asked for an Activation Code!!
Edit to Add: According to This Page, I'm not sure if it will run on Windows 7.
Is that a shot in the foot. _________________ Richard

Just found out that the link on the Activation Screen takes you to the AutoRoute 2007 purchase, which IS $39.95.
According to This Page it won't be available until November 17th. _________________ Richard

It certainly would be a shot in the foot And exactly the sort of stupidity you could expect from M$ ! _________________ Jock

The trial works fine in Windows 7. The icons for pushpins are very artistic (a.k.a. rubbish) but that's no problem, I'll get used to them.
Thank you SOOOOOO much Jock for finding this. Now all I have to do is make this fax modem work. Smile - when I went to buy it, the spotty person said Oh yes, we've got lots of routers, I said FAX and Spotty said yes routers have fax modem built in. _________________ Dennis

This is not the case with me - When I run it, the first thing I get is a window, choice of Activate now or Run the trial, so it works again (after telling me I have 59 days of trial left). It also opens files saved previously with AR 2007.
It took an age to load this morning, so I don't know if all is well. _________________ Dennis
