Anyone interested can see reviews here....
Will be good if someone can upload some videos. Think its due out in November according to MM.

Memory Map Adventurer 2800 and Adventurer 2800 review |
The comments about refresh rate and build quality are encouraging. However, not much use for those of us who are Mac users (MM is not available on the Mac platform) and I'm still not convinced about the wisdom of using a touchscreen interface on a rugged outdoor GPS. |

I've seen it said many times that touch screens are not very robust for hard outdoor use ( I think Satmap themselves state this ) and I have no doubt that it is true but have never seen a reason given as to why apart from difficulty in using it with gloves on perhaps.
Any offers ?

I'll take a bash at it...
My experience with an HP iPAQ Windows Mobile Pocket PC running Memory Map informs me that in wet weather, the touch screen becomes very unreliable/unpredictable once there is water on the screen.
It seemed to be completely unable to distinguish between a droplet of water sitting on the touchscreen and my finger touching the touchscreen to "press" a button. That was without any gloves on, and at a reasonably moderate temperature.
I think that the problem was with the fact that the technology at the time was "single touch" (as opposed to "multitouch"): i.e. the touch screen was unable to detect more than one "touch" input at any one time, and it interpreted a drop of water on the touch screen as a "touch", effectively disabling any additional finger touches anywhere on the screen. It may well be that technology has moved on (I know that Apple have certainly mastered the multi-touch "gesture" input since then) but until that is proven in the case of a handheld GPS, I'll reserve judgement. |

Thanks for that lucevans but Satmap, among others, say that touch screens are not "robust" enough for regular outdoor use implying that they will eventually break or whatever yet I have never heard or read of anyone that this has actually happened to.
Your description of the problems in rain, whilst undoubtedly an inconvenience, does not constitute the unit actually breaking or becoming damaged in some way.

That's true, but a GPS that doesn't work (or even just might not work) in rain is no good to me as an outdoor navigation aid, regardless of whether it recovers when the sun comes out.
(Another meaning of the word Robust is able to withstand or overcome adverse conditions) |

I unreservedly agree with Lucevan's comments re free non-commercial use of OS Maps. In the USA I believe that has been the case for some time. Of course, the corrupt commercialisation holds true for many UK semi-government organisations....all with fat cats feeding off our taxes.
The OS and its mandarins have gown fat on being paid twice for products that we, the public, originally fund. I wish I could start a business like that. Then I would be out walking, happily enjoying the ill-gotten gains. What happened to integrity and ethics?
In a slightly differnet vein I am truly angry about the removal of Christian Church symbols from OS maps in what is a Christian country. Churches are also landmarks, very useful in navigation. Yet again, the PC leftists are destroying our heritage, giving it away to anyone who squeeks about 'rights'...so long as they were not born in the UK.
It is time for us to take back our heritage, our maps and the organistion we pay for...the OS. |

I've owned a Sat map for about 18 months and bought a Adv2800 last November. Just sold the Adv2800 on. Compared to the Satmap it was just harder to use.
- needed Stylus to use. The menus are tiny. Not so good with gloves.
- Small screen with a daft aspect ratio.
- Map transfer and licensing not as simple as it could be
- Manual (such as it is) very poor
- Lower Battery life than Satmap Li-Pol. not user-replaceable
- Less functions. No compass - trip data etc etc.
- Poor interface. eg GPS or Position info can only be displayed in a 'window' over the main map screen - on an already tiny screen.
The Satmap is a chunkier device with a lower res screen but many more functions - to me that makes it easier to use and with a clearer display. |
