EGNOS and SatMap

Anything we should be aware of with this one ? 2 Mtrs as apposed to 20 Mtrs is a heck of a difference......(meanwhile I shall still continue to carry a good old paper map.)

Yes I saw that EGNOS is now working and wondered about it regarding Satmap.

I seem to remember though when Garmin first brought out the 60CSx to replace the 60CS they had a problem with picking up WAAS and seemed reluctant to bother fixing it as they said the Sirf Star chip they were using at the time was so sensitive it didn't really need WAAS.

I think the Satmap uses this chip so perhaps that also doesn't really need EGNOS.

I shall be visiting the Cycle Show at Earls Court next week and Satmap are there,I will enquire about it.

Bosun while you are at the cycle show maybe have a gander at the Memory Map device and report back
is it worked via touch screen etc.

looking at the images from Web site there seem to be a
minimalistic number of function buttons shown

also any improvement for Satmap devices would be useful to know about

Is the Active 10 WAAS/EGNOS enabled – my Garmin is?

WAAS & EGNOS are ground based systems designed to supplement the GPS signal. These systems were developed at a time when the GPS service was providing poor accuracy. Modern GPS chipsets offer a much higher degree of accuracy now: we in fact are using the SiRF Star III which is widely considered to be the most advanced GPS chipsets available. The accuracy this offers renders the need for a ground based augmentation system largely irrelevant.
In fact, it is for this very reason that neither WAAS nor EGNOS are likely to be rolled out anywhere other than the limited areas of coverage they currently provide. The EU is, instead, diverting financial resources into the establishment of the Galileo Satellite navigation system, thereby signalling the de facto end of EGNOS specifically. And, as you are probably aware, WAAS applied only in the USA, and even then in only limited areas, and this too is not being extended.

Hmm, they have a point but as you know they are wholly wrong about EGNOS's future.

It's being rolled out to support aviation users, it is not and was never intended for hikers and other outdoor usage.

I'll ask Satmap what plans they have for EGNOS but the service is not designed for reception in the type of conditions prevalent in mountains etc.

EGNOS went live in Europe (including the UK) on 1st Oct 2009. See http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/09/1399 for details.

It really is there, and it improves the reported accuracy of handheld GPS units when the EGNOS signal is visible- I can attest to that from personal experience over the last few days. However, I agree completely with Darren; According to Wikipedia, the EGNOS system consists of 3 satellites - so when in a steep-sided valley, the chances of seeing one of those satellites is not great.

No line-of-sight = No EGNOS augmentation of the standard GPS position.

With good reception, even standard positioning on the A10 can give me 5m accuracy; EGNOS might give 2-3m, so the difference when looking at an OS map is pretty minimal really, but if it's available why not make use of it?

How do you tell it's EGNOS and not the regular sat's you're picking up ?
