Hope you can help guys, so here's what I do. What do you recommend?
I visit 4 or 5 garages (usually main dealers) a day. They enter their address on my site, but usually the addresses are a bit ambiguous (like Uxbridge Road Greenford, when in reality they're in Southall but Greenford sounds better), or something like 'Gallows corner Romford' (where Gallows corner is not a proper address). However, their postcode is usually correct. I currently have a Co-pilot live with an Ipaq something or other.
Here's what I need:-
Something to take me to a postcode.
Something I can load the following day's addresses at home.
Here's what I really don't need:-
10 million POI's ( I can easily find a petrol station)
Speed camera's/traffic
Bluetooth/waas/wan/rams/roms/infrared/USB etc etc
Decent size screen (not getting any younger)
Decent speaker (not getting any younger)
Something I don't have to keep pushing a reset button
Loading this that or the other
Money is not a problem, and I'm considering a TomTom Go or Garmin 2620. Am I correct in thinking the Garmin can do postcodes? What do you think? |

The best solution is probably TomTom 3 with free download of ukpostcodes from digitools (details on the TomTom page. It's worth also downloading version 2 of Checkpoint (free), even if you never use it, as it makes the interface between ukpostcodes and TomTom work more smoothly

TomTom3 is probably the answer here, coupled with Digitools UKPostCode you can enter the PostCodes the night before, show the location of that Post Code on the map and then record that location as a custom POI for future use.
Then the next day you just tap 'Navigate To | POI | Custom POI Name' and select your POI from the list of entries you've added and you're away. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You don't even need to go to all that trouble Darren. Just type in the postcode, press the Navigate to button and it will start up TomTom and you're away!

True but the OP said he wanted to be able to load the next day's addresses the evening before.
I guess if you don't need to retain these locations long term you could save them as favourites (Max 20 locations) and delete them each day but saving as POI's (No limit to numbers) means you can recall them at a later date if you ever need to revisit. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks for the info guys.
Being honest, all this talk of downloading this and that gets me worried. I was hoping to dump the PDA route and go with a dedicated unit.
Will the TomTom Go take me to a full postcode, or will that need something downloading onto it to achieve that? Does the 2620 take me to postcodes? |

Neither TomTom's GO!, Navman's iCN630 nor Garmin's StreettPilot 2620 will allow you to navigate to a full UK Post Code and as dedicated units there are no plug-ins available
Whilst it may sound complicated it really is very straightforward, allow an hour or so for the iniitial installation and you'll be all set. The only thing you should bear in mind is keeping it charged, PDA's lose their memory if the battery is allowed to discharge completely and then you need to re-install or restore a backup.
Don't forgedt we'll be here to talk you through the shopping list and installation. You'll get a much more powerful unit for half the price of a dedicated one and you'll be able to upgrade as you need. _________________ Darren Griffin |
