Welcome back figero. Without trying to sound like a know-it-all-southern-softey-pants (you'll meet Dennis_N later), having a French computer language should not present you with too much trouble for backing up your TT and downloading the SafetyCam database.

An easy way of getting to WindowsExplorer is by holding down the "WindowsLogo" key on your computer key board (bottom-left) and then press the letter "e". Release both keys.

This will take you to WindowsExplorer where you will be able to see the TomTom files. To copy the TT files, highlight them by single "clicking" on the first file and then hold down the "shift" key and scroll down to the bottom of the files using the key board "down" arrow until all files are highlighted. Release both keys.

Now copy the files by holding down "Ctrl" key and pressing "c". Now paste the files by highlighting a FOLDER on your computers hard drive with a single "click" of the mouse and then hold down the "Ctrl" key once again and press "v".

Et Viola! Not a bit of French in sight and you have just backed up your TomTom.

After this, you will be ready to download your first database and install it.

To safely disconnect your TT, use the UnMount icon which is at the bottom right of your computer screen and looks a grey rectangle with a green tick. Get into the habit of always UnMounting your TT (and other USB's, SD's, etc.) before unplugging.

I know that and I copied Microsoft's instructions how to change it to English. Then I gave him a link to translate the English commands into french so he could recognise them on his computer.

Just a last note to Figaro....
Don't worry about the camera database itself, it isn't software at all, it's only data presented in a format that the existing TomTom software can understand.
So there's nothing that the PGPSW database can do which would mess up your TomTom or your PC.

ok folks its figero again, as far as i can see i think i have just backed up my go to this french computer. i found a empty file on c drive called PERFLOGS; i dont know what that means but it was empty so ive used that. i have re opened it several times and its full of tom tom files so i guess that was a success. now i will attempt to finally download the camera database, so i hope it is as easy as the back up. can anyone talk me through it so i can alternately bring up each page so i can follow the directions please kind regards bob

A Google search brought up this response in another forum as to what the Perflogs folder is used for: "There is no mystery with this folder. It contains all of the data files that are created by the Reliability and Performance Monitor in Vista."

I don't think it's wise to use an existing folder for your backups, in case an application on your computer writes to the folder and corrupts your backups, or vice versa.

Why not just create a folder on the desktop called "TomTom backups", and each time you backup your device create a folder in there named with the date and the application and map number, and copy the contents of your device to it?

To create a new folder, there are several methods, but one of the easiest is to right click (on the desktop if you want it there, or in an open window in Explorer if you want it somewhere else) then select "New Folder".

Meanwhile, the simplest way to get out of the situation you're in would be to right click on the PREFLOGS folder and select "Rename" in order to to change the name to something else - maybe "TomTom_Backps".
Windows should create a new PERFLOGS folder for itself if it ever needs to use it.

I'm sure HOME created a TomTom folder in My Documents. I then created a backup folder within it.

Figaro, have you managed to change your PC's language to English?

Just make sure you make your own backup folder as a sub-folder of My Documents\TomTom.

Don't make it inside Home's own folder at My Documents\TomTom\HOME.

.....Because Home makes it's own folder called "Backup" in there and you don't want yours in mixed up with theirs.

Hi figaro, Well done for backing up your TomTom.

However, my instructions were not complete and it looks like we may have a few small steps to take before we get to installing the SafetyCams onto your TT. Sorry,

We shall need to get your TT backup into its own folder and then restore the folder you have "borrowed" to its original condition.

To go forward, we need to know what you have done. Have you completed any of the suggestions made by Anita, Calomax or Andy_P?

Edited for spelling

Hi Figero,

How are you getting on?

Where in France are you? I shall be traveling from Perpignan to Toulouse soon, so if you are in the S.W. of France and somewhere on my route I can easily meet you in a bar and help set up your TT for you.

Let me know if this could be any help.

Regards, AliOnHols.
