Both Autoroute Service Stops and Autoroute Rest/Picnic stops exist as POI's. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Toytown
Haven't travelled THROUGH France on back roads, but have travelled quite a lot in Northern France, always on back roads (sometimes with the emphasis very much on 'back' ) and have not encountered any problems. In fact, having TT has meant that we can drive on roads that would be difficult to follow on a paper-based map, so we have got to see much more of the country as a result.
Enjoy your trip |

I've done the back roads through to Switzerland. Good fun planning the route also, I can recommend the Michelin site at http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm on the "driving directions" page, you can avoid tolls etc and then input into TT3 as an Itinerary
Regards,

Hi SteveW,
The Michelin site looks very interesting. Have you used the Route planning software by chance? If so does it compliment TTN3 etc.? _________________ Graham |

Graham,
I have found the Michelin route planner very useful.
TT3 is also excellent, but it tends to route via the Toll roads/Peages....and I get bored on those routes, so I plan a route and then use "Itinerary" and put points along the route I want to take. I must say Itinerary also works very well, as long as you ensure you put the points on the correct side of the dual carriageway. been caught out a couple of times with that.
MRE is a bit dicey, if you hit a deviation, and you leave the "main route"- the French are useless at signposting these!!

As I am still waiting for my TT for Palm to arrive (It is in the post), I am happy to report that I have used ViaMichelin all over Europe very extensively. By using a trip reading for the kms, I find it pretty easy. Its main problem is total lack of detail in many towns. It pinpoints my house in a tiny village in Belgium exactly, but often does not have reasonable sized roads in French towns.
Its great advantage is that you can do routes without tolls, fastest, shortest, via as many places as you like etc. However, following routes in towns is very difficult if you are on your own.
However, I cannot wait for my TT BT to arrive |

Hi Toytown
Reference your original question about Aires de Services. There is a download for the Aires at GpsPassion. Go to the "French" section and have alook at the POI's and it can be downloaded their. Their is also a POI giving the location of the peage tollbooths also.
Agood way of getting the backroads is to change your routing from quickest to shortest---some nice single track lanes.

Hi Toytown
Forgot to mention in my last post. The "Aires" download is for the motorhome aires de services. If that is what you want its GpsPassion.Click on the Fra box at top right hand. When French part of site comes up--click on 'POI en France'.Then click on 'Les Collects de POI's sur GpsPassion'.When that page comes up go to 'Aires Camping-Car France'.
Click on that title and the page of the forum comes up. Scroll down and you will see the download link for thr aires programme.
Regards

Hi Toytown,
I am going through France into Spain and past Salou in August. As others have said the Viamichelin site is great :D. I did the same journey last year with their routes and some from another site called Mappy.
I will be loading up my TTN3 soon and hope to be able to do the journey just with Tomtom to guide me but will know doubt take some paper routes with me just in case something goes horribly wrong with Tomtom during the journey . I will be back before you go so I will post some feedback for you when I return. In the mean time you might find a previous post "TomTom2 maps of france" interesting. [sorry I can't put a link in to this post, I'm still learning ]
If all else fails I'm sure that you will find a Pilk's wagon at one of the services and you can ask the driver for directions _________________ iPAQ 1940, Pocket PC2003, BT TTN5 |
