Looking for a tomtom to replace my wifes old unit, after finally getting hold of a working 730, my wife likes it, a little too much.
I've been looking, the 520 looks similar physically, and offers bluetooth handsfree, so what are the differences? If I've read correctly the 520 has no IQ routes, which seems to be the only difference between the two devices.
Is it as it seems, that they are essentially the same device?
Did the 520 have the latest map guarantee? If so would this allow the 520 to use IQ routes, and thus offer essentially the same feature set?
I only ask because the 520's are a lot cheaper... _________________ TT 730

Cosmetic differences to the case colour and trim are the only hardware difference.
The 520 is supplied with earlier software and maps in the box, but if you update the software (for free) with Home and THEN update the map (for free) with the Latest Map Guarantee, you end up with exactly the same machine as the 530.
As Mike said in a very similar post earlier today...
Quote:
1/ Make a full backup using Windows Explorer (See FAQ page near the top of this forum index page if unsure it is listed as #1)
2/ Download and install the latest TomTom Home to your PC
3/ Update the application to the latest available (curently 8,351)
4/ Use latest map guarantee to get the latest map (currently v830)
Once you have done the above make another Windows Explorer backup

I purchased a 520 and upgraded it to essentially a 530. The only difference is the surround which is a different colour on the X30 models.
The 530 was released with IQ routes and Advance Lane Guidance which the 520 did not have. However with software releases and new maps both of these functions now work on the 520.
This upgrading is something TT should be commended about and everyone should be shouting this fact from the rooftops. However due to what appears to be untested software releases the whole process of upgrading has become a nightmare. Each software release results in hundreds of post on this web site as everyone tries to sort out the newly introduced bugs. Some great workarounds come from here which quite frankly put TT to shame.
Also don’t expect it to do everything on the box, ie hands free. It is totally dependent on what phone you have and what software you are running. If hands free is important to you make sure your phone will pair, make a call and receive a call before you buy. _________________ TT520 running App 8.351 & map UK&I v845.26345
