Quote: | Carrying power plugs - especially Britain's big ones - can be the bugbear of any gadget-laden traveller. But one designer may have come up with a solution: a folding plug. |
The Register - Designer pitches flat-pack power plug

Good innit! It was the talk of Twitter yesterday. Not sure if it would ever be able to meet BS Safety Standards but it is areal beauty of a design and that multi-plug idea is fantastic.
How much neater would the rats nest of plugs be and how much easier my bag would be to pack. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The SlimPlug looks like a good idea where the pins fold into the plug itself. I've never seen it in a retail store though - all the links seen were for wholesale.
Also, it doesn't have a three pin "cloverleaf" connection. _________________ Gerry

Also, I have a really useful adapter for my laptop power supply which allows me to use any figure-8 (IEC C7) type cable for it. I got mine from RS, but I can never make their web site search work - once you have the part you can type in the EXACT description and it will find it, but unless you already have the product (why would you want to search for it then?), you're stuffed. _________________ Jock

Very nice design idea, would love to see it adopted, but I just can't see it somehow. Rather then trying to get manufacturers to adopt it, the easiest way to get it into public view would be as a user-replacement plug, but the design looks like it could only be moulded on.
But for travelling, bare wires and matchsticks is much smaller (DEAD matches of course... safety first!) |

Simply ram the bare wires home using a local plug - most hotel rooms have a kettle or desk lamp. If not, you can use a light bulb to hold the wires into the overhead light socket (BC only!) _________________ Jock

You'll find that the weight saved by dispensing with the matches will allow you to carry a suitably cut length of six inch nail - some of those foreign fuses are really weak and I find that tin foil burns through too quickly _________________ Jock
