pocketgpsworld.comMio have announced a two new models in Navman's Spirit range, the V735 and V505. Using Mio's latest Spirit interface with a slidetouch screen that sees menus glide on and off the screen, they also offer a feature that is a first for satnav here in the UK, a Digital TV receiver.

Both models come complete with a built-in Freeview Tuner. With auto-tuning, seven day programme guide and a twin antenna diversity system, the touchscreen devices are well specified.

Such a solution could prove very popular for use by taxi drivers, truckers, sales people and other professionals whilst on breaks or having reached their destination.

The V735 has a 7" widescreen and the V505 and 4.5" screen. Both models will be available in the UK in July and we hope to have a review unit as soon as they become available.

I assume it's not going to let you watch Freeview when you're actually driving!?!

The PR doesn't say but I do hope that has been prevented.

Why not? There's nothing wrong with the passenger or kids in the back watching it when you're on the motorway for 3 hours. I would imagine you can't use it and navigate at the same time, but if it tries to prevent you watching it at all when the vehicle is moving that would defeat the point of it!

Common sense is sadly lacking though. The saving grace will I suspect be the appalling digital signal which is unlikely to drive the set unless you live and drive in Central London!

All these other Sat Nav / CD Player / Radio / DVD Player / Teas-maid / TV Tuner units have a wire that connects to the handbrake or speedo to stop them being used in motion, so why should this be any different?

Done properly it should use the GPS data to work out if the device is moving and shut down the TV receiver, the unit in my car needs a wire to the handbrake for DVD/ TV mode but I simply "Grounded" the wire to avoid the hastle of getting to the handbrake switch, its not got a Teas-maid function though I wonder if I can upgrade it for this option.......

Also PND units need to be quick release, getting something wired in to the car electrics is a specialist job for some people and would detract from sales - Mike

What next.... honestly i ask ya, rather then adding pointless features that have nothing to do with satellite navigation why not improve the function and features of the satnav itself.. rather then going of on a tangent with this ludicrous idea.

I agree with mikes piont on the wiring into the handbrake. The GPS should detect movement, and due to theft it needs to be easy to remove from the car.

Quite how you will slip the V735 in you pocket though???
If you are on a camping holiday then the freeview would be handy as you could still watch the football round the fire.

When does the UK go fully digital?

2012 is the date when the last region switches over. Only then can they ramp up DvB signal strength which is required by portable devices using mini antenna.

Then we will also be able to utilise the laptop solutions that have the 3" mini desk antennas.

Turns out the unit only displays a warning when the TV is on and the car is moving.

The Register

I did see last year that Garmin were planning a unit that had DvB too but it's failed to materialise...

Stuff like this will only lead to trouble with safety campaigners. Yes we know it 'could' be used by the kids in the back seat but we also know there will be no shortage of idiots who will have it on the windscreen in TV mode.

You only have to follow some car forums where TV is fitted to the console but disabled whilst moving. No shortage of planks there discussing methods to bypass the safety features and enable it.

regardless of how manufacturers inpliment new options such as the TV not working while driving, someone will always find a way round it.
i.e unlocking phone, getting the satnav to boot to WINCE

Well, there's been a response from Mio regarding the criticism. To me, it seems fair - why should the vast majority of sensible people be stopped from using a device like this just because a few idiots will use it when they shouldn't.

From Digital Spy - Mio responds to Freeview satnav criticism

Quote:
"When enabling the TV's to work whilst moving, Mio had to consider the needs of all users, not just the driver," the firm said.

"Passengers, children in the rear of cars, travellers on buses and on trains would like to able to use this device whilst it is moving."

Hmm, perhaps for the same reason we have to wear safety belts and carsh helmets? I take their point but we know this will encourage some idiot to use it whilst driving.
