Agreed, but it does reflect a softening of Apple's restrictions to their own 'secured' environment (I own several applications that apologise for not allowing use of iPod libraries because the Apple SDK prevents it {they say}).
I wonder what happens when the first 5th Avenue hotshot rear-ends another one because 'Apple allowed' his phone to interrupt his Navigation around Times Square and he immediately calls his hot shot lawyers? (I know, there are a lot of hot shots in there, but that's New York for you!).
An elegant solution is required, rules or no rules.
There is plenty of multitasking going on. In app SMS messaging (from the Apple world into 3rd party apps); likewise the Apple clock's alarms.. etc etc
Might one of the 100 new APIs have allowed a 3rd party application to manage calls? (I don't know the answer, just wondering - you've access to the SDK, is there nothing like this?). _________________ iPhone 4/4S (iOS 5.1.1); TomTom Western Europe (1.10)/USA & Canada (1.10); CoPilot for iPhone (8), UK mapping, Mac OS 10.8/XP Pro/Win7; Tongue firmly in cheek! |

There's a lot of speculation about how this will work, but the one thing that is guaranteed is that TomTom will deliver the product late and it will be untested and support will not have a clue...
One of the key advantages of the subscription concept is that it should stop software piracey which is the main reason the PDA version disappeared for such a long time. If not it will be hacked within days, also subscription services may mean they have to deliver a completely different map file format which isn't a good thing from a development & maintenance concept.

i'm sure i saw somewhere that the new sdk allowed you to reject a call without killing the app. like with sms messages - it comes up as a pop up that you can either close the app and open the message app to reply or hit cancel to make it go away...
as is usually the case, i can;t find it anywhere...!! might have been in the developer area back when os3 was first in beta...

Just to let you know that I've been playing with the iPhone 3.0 Beta's and A2DP is working pretty well with the IO-Play system. However Apple seem to have left out allowing the functionality of the skip and back buttons, so they don't work.
Also when playing music the audio is interrupted for message alert sounds etc. A while ago I played with the amateur sat nav app xGPS and it was able to interupt music to announce directions using bluetooth via the IO Play, although that was for a Jailbroken device. I still think this will be possible for Tomtom. |

More iPhone/TomTom news from Here.
Mount is optional, but the chip inside makes a difference.
Mapsets are associated with the app - separate apps for different territories: US, Europe (on board mapping - YES!; to have both Europe and US, you appear to need to download 2 separate apps)
No comment to monthly fee enquiries _________________ iPhone 4/4S (iOS 5.1.1); TomTom Western Europe (1.10)/USA & Canada (1.10); CoPilot for iPhone (8), UK mapping, Mac OS 10.8/XP Pro/Win7; Tongue firmly in cheek! |

Interesting albeit the last comment is incorrect, in app subscriptions will be coming with OS 3.0. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I would have assumed as much with regard to separate European and North American apps. I would thin it necessary with likely add-ons available. I don't agree with the reviewers determination that subscriptions would not be part of TomTom's plans (of course ). _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

Dare I ask if it supports TomTom live services (HDTraffic in particular)?

That info is as yet an unknown. We're trying to secure an interview and demo to coincide with the launch of the 3G S model next week. _________________ Darren Griffin |

That's correct, OS 3.0 goes live world-wide on the 17th and the 3G S is on sale Fri 19th.
I'm running 3.0 now and it's very good, stable, faster than 2.0 and worth it for the landscape keyboard in mail alone! Cut'n'paste is also here at long last. _________________ Darren Griffin |
