Can anyone suggest a reason why a TomTom 930 fails to connect to a PC all of a sudden? I have two 930s attached to different PCs, both worked well until I downloaded the latest TT updates.
One works fine, the other goes dark after the "connect to PC" screen and requires a hard reboot. I swapped the mounts around and they both work fine so it seems like a problem with one device.
Batteries are at 80-90% and nothing has changed on the PCs.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Try a reset on the unit. That often corrects this kind of problem. _________________ David |

Now I have a serious problem. Hard and soft resets do not have any impact. The device starts up and performs but will not hook up via USB. Stick it on the desk mount, "Do you want to connect to computer", "Yes", the screen goes black and nothing else happens.
Logic dictates doing a complete restore but if you can't get the device to be seen by any computer how do I get around this?

Install the application to an SD card using a card reader, put the card in the omTom and fire it - now see if it will connect to the PC - Mike |

I changed the Motherboard on one of my PC's as some USB devices were not recognised, and that included TomTom and portable HDD's.
You can also buy a 4 port USB card on eBay for a fiver. |

Thanks to Mike and Technik for their suggestions. I have checked the desktop device and that works fine, as does the USB ports on three machines. I even shoved a standalone USB cable into the device and the device did not show up on the PC desktop so I am pretty sure the problem is software not hardware.
Mike: when you say load the application on to a SD card can I do this by simply dragging the files from the RESTORE folder?
Thanks

What I would do is a manual install of the Navcore software to a memory card, the Navcore software will be stored on your PC in the folder Home uses to store downloads, the most recent update will be named "8.351.9982.go530-go730-go930.CAB-navcore-GO" if you can locate that file simply extract all the contents of the file to an SD card in an SD card reader then put the card in the TomTom and switch it on, I use WinRar for doing the file extraction, but Windows Explorer should be able to handle this on its own - Mike |

Mike Alder, bloody brilliant! Spent all evening copying files across to 4 gig SD card, rebooted and the device instantly recognised the USB connection, an up TT Home and saw both the internal hard drive and the card.
I assume I need to copy the contents of the SD card into the internal memory to overwrite the corruption but I shall do that in the morning after I hear from you.
Many thanks, as ever.

Take the SD card out and the device should work as normal, by putting the application on the card you have got the boot loader working correctly so the device should function as normal.
If it doesn;t put the card back in and post back, at least the device is useable again - Mike |

Mike: it failed again. It seems that overwriting the back-up on to the SD card worked, took the card out, and it failed again, and then appears to have corrupted the main memory again. Going through the process again now that I have a decent multi-card reader and shall report back.
Cheers |

Get it working from the SD card then use Windows Explorer to view the files and folders in the internal memory, assuming you can see these take a full copy of whats stored on the internal Flash memory then right clck the drive letter associated with the Flash Store and select "Format" don't choose the quick format option.
Once its done that copy your backup to the Flash store, remove the SD card and see if it will work as normal. It could be the internal memory has become corrupt or this could be signs that the internal memory is about to pack up, we have seen this occur on a few devices (not too many though). If the internal memory continues to give you issues run the device with the SD or SDHC card inserted and you won't have any problems - Mike |

Nike: sorry but none of the fixes work. It seems that my back ups have corrupted something that reformatting and reinstalling will not fix. I have purged everything a couple of times, reinstalled, run up the device with the SD card and it works once only then falls over.
I fear I will have to go down the repair route

One final DIY trick thats worth trying is the clear flash tool from TomTom, you can find the download and instructions on This Page run it three times on the device then try loading up the device as you might find the internal memory has reappeared, if not try the SDcard again - Mike |

Mike: I already tried that without success. I reckon something has totally stuffed the internals and it needs a low level format and reinstall with a know good system. I think I am just reloading the error.
TomTom have told me to send it back to Regenersis for flushing, etc.
I understand totally the logic of what you have been suggesting and I thank you for all your help.
Best wishes
