Newbie advice prior to purchasing

Hi,
Looking to buy first ever sat nav and looking on the Navman site a factory repacked S70 (£69.00).The unit is shown having tele atlas map data 2007.4. How is this number worked out April 2007??,also the S series map update dvd western europe shows 2007.10 maps costing £69.95 (dearer than the repacked sat nav S70 itself).I take it that the 2007.4 maps are now out of date?,any advice be grateful,new to all of this.Thanks.Tartdog.

This is always a difficult one to answer. Everyone has their favourites.

As you say the map data is old, but the price reflects this.

If you purchased say a TomTom or even Garmin unit you will get a latest map guarantee. I appreciate that may not be in budget, but buying a £70 unit then having to spend another £70 to update the map brings you into a different ball court.

I'm not saying buy a TomTom but have a look HERE (opens in a new window).

You will see different tabs for selecting different models and even refurb units.

I was about to caution against a Navman but have been beaten to it. A Garmin is a much much better option IMHO.

The worst GPS I have purchased!!! Cant adjust the overspeed, as it is set by Navman at 5% above road speed. Cant change Map colours, has an ugly white one yet has the map colours already installed in the files on board. Has bugs in the Alerts such as the accident black spots where they dont alarm in the GO function but does on MAP function. Has a stupid plug for the headphones that attach via the USB connector on the bottom of the Unit but you cannot add the car cable to keep the battery charged so guess what..... The blue tooth function is very poor...... Good things, looks great and the the slide like I Phone front interface is OK once you get used to it. ALan

Alvet- you seem to be referring to the Spirit devices and not the S70.

In the software you cant on the Spirit (S70 you can)
F:\Program Files\Navman\SmartST_CE\UserData
In here editing the default settings.xml and device settings you can adjust the overspeed

The user interface is not intuitive, it lacks the ability to display key information, the map colour scheme is poor and cannot be changed, it is slow, prone to random crashes (Spirit) and ongoing support and updates will based on previous models be poor or non-existent.

I have no beef with Navman or Mio, my first ever Satnav was a Navman but when someone asks for an opinion of a device compared to all the others available then I am bound to give it!

For those that like it, great. But when compared with other devices that are available they are bot in my opinion worthy of consideration.
