Tom Tom versus Pocket GPS World speed camera database ?

My Tom Tom camera subscription runs out in a couple of days.

I had heard good things about the Pocket GPS world camera subscription.

The opinions I have read imply that it is superior to the Tom Tom version.

I was considering purchasing, until I read the installation guide.

It appears to be a quite lengthy and not very straightforward procedure.

Am I being naive in expecting to pay £20 subscription, click on a link and then have things set up automatically, or at least with relatively little input on my part ?

Can anyone who has switched from using the Tom Tom speed camera to Pocket GPS world version convince me of the virtues of the latter ?

the guide DOES look complex but if you read through it you will see that it is very literally step by step with explanations of what copy and paste are etc etc!

if you are computer literate then it will be a piece of cake!

put simply:

download zip file
extract files
copy files to map folder on tomtom
go to edit pois
go to warn when near pois
go through each camera type/speed and set warning and warning distance
drive :D

setting up the warnings only needs to be done once as updating the files simply updates the data without having to re-set up the warnings.

you can also use our voice warning files and have warnings such as 'warning, gatso ahead, speed limit 50 miles an hour' as opposed to 'ding' :D

I take your point about supporting a large number of manufacturers.

Whilst I welcome your helpful replies, I would also like to hear from anyone who has made the change from Tom Tom own camera subscription to Pocket GPS World cameras who are not Pocket GPS World staff.

I must clarify that I am not suggesting that your opinions lack impartiality

Same as what everyone else says, it is not a problem.
It is different to TT, but no big deal.

Written instructions can be a bit daunting, but when you work through them, it's fine.

Just download the file you want to desktop, unzip it as you would any other file you download, and copy to the map folder on your device, using the process you usually use for copy and paste.
That's it really, then set up the warning distances from within 'Preferences' and 'Manage POI' on the device.

I'm not quite as old as the 80 years mentioned, but I am what could be called a Silver Surfer, and I manage OK.

Just did a quick count up and I think it's just 5 mouse clicks to download and install the database to my TomTom 520. OK you have to set up your warnings and preferences, but that's generally a one off, unless you get a new Navcore or map.

Second and subsequent downloads are just as easy and you don't touch anything else.

The TT database is not a patch on this one and yes, it will be the best £20 you spend on navigation.

To to add my two pence worth after having the Tomtoms own camera database on my sat nav I compared the Pocketgps one against it and to be honest the Pocketgps was so much better !!

Regarding loading the pocketgps on your sat nav believe me I am not very good with computers and I manage it okay without any problems.
The support you get on this site if you do have any problems is exceptional

Sounds like you've been convinced anyway, but thought I'd say that I purchased my first TomTom yesterday (been using Navman until now), and the method of installing the database is so well documented on this site, that it's really straightforward - even for someone who has not used the TT operating system before.

I'd say that 5 minutes for the first install is a little optimistic - I think it took about 15 for me to set up all the warning distances and sounds, but as this is a one off process, future updates will take around 30 seconds!

Compared to Navman where you have to upload each type & speed separately, and takes about 30 minutes, the TT system is far superior - and when you sign up and start submitting any cameras you find that aren't on the database (although I've only found 3 in about 3 years!), then you'll be helping all of us Smile

If you did sign up and install the database, how about posting some comments to help anyone else who may have the same dilemma?
