|
|
Over the years I have downloaded POI category files and successfully unzipped them using WinZip 8.1. Recently WinZip always gives the error message "cannot open file: not a valid archive". I installed the latest version of WinZip 12 but this consistently gives the same error message. It is not a corrupted downloaded file problem because it happens every time I download - and over an appreciable period of time. I have no problems unzipping files downloaded from other sites using WinZip 8.1. Please can you suggest a remedy?
Although not important because there is a workround, at the same time your site stopped inserting the POI file categories - clicking refresh or simply waiting had no effect. The workround is to click download, which gives the error page saying no download file selected then clicking on the link to return to the POI download page. This page then displays with the POI categories already inserted.
Thanks,

If you have XP or Vista, what happens if you look at the ZIP File with Explorer?
Does it display the contents? _________________ Richard

I am using XP and hovering the pointer over a zip file in Explorer normally shows the first 2 or 3 files in the archive. Now, hovering over a 6MB downloaded POI file displays the message "no zip file, bad zip file or part of a spanned/split zip file". There are no other zip-associated downloads such as Data.Z01, Data.Z02. |

Are you downloading an OV2 set?
If so, are you exceeding 30 Subcategories, per Main Category?
Have you used the Show Link option? _________________ Richard

Sorry, slip of the tongue keyboard-wise. The file was a 6kB OV2 download which didn't exceed 30 sub-categories.
I had never clicked the show link button and, after selection, simply clicked the download button which opened the small Windows File Download window with open/save/cancel options.
I selected holiday park, then clicked show link before clicking download. This time it opened a plain white PGPSW page with two options - download POIs.zip and make new selection. Clicking download opened the Windows File Download window as before but the downloaded zip file was a valid WinZip file format.
Thanks for advising selecting show link which gives valid archive file formats but which, to the uninitiated, seems an unnecessary step
Regards

Most people don't need it, but it is there if you have problems....
It says right next to the tick-box "[use 'show link' if you have problems opening the file once downloaded or it appears to be empty]" |
