|
|
I started this topic because I couldn't find another one using search etc.
I already have 3 Nuvi 300, 600 and 760. I have just purchased a 5000
because I like the large screen and my eyes are not what they used to
be. As I tow a caravan, I prefer to be considered a truck and the options
are better for my purposes. I am not interested in Bluetooth as I totally
ignore my telephone when I'm driving. Having no battery doesn't
concern me as I have a 12 volt power supply which I can use in the house.
I am going to download the latest speed camera database in the hope
that it will be the same as my other Nuvi's. I have never had any trouble
with them. I use my own set of pre-recorded POI messages on the earlier
Nuvi's and trust that the 5000 will allow me to do the same.
If anyone has experience of the 5000 and knows any snags I might
encounter I would appreciate any help or any views on this particular
model as I have only had it for 24 hours and have yet to plug it in
the car.
Thanks,
Ben. |

The 5000 hasn't received much attention, a pity IMO. It's quite different from what you'd expect from the nuvi line in many ways. First and foremost, it's a Linux-based OS. Only the 8x0 and 8x5 nuvis share that platform so far. But Garmin uses an entirely different engineering team for the Linux devices, and have added functions not available the the other models. Avoidance functions are closer to the old Streetpilots. You can set-up any combination of individual roads, even an entire rectangular area, to avoid. Once done, these roads and areas will not be used in routes. The screen resolution is much higher than any other nuvi at 800x480, resulting is very legible text, a big benefit for those who need reading glasses. Another plys: You can turn off autozoom. Only the other linux Garmins's allow this. It also makes use of a light sensor, adjusting brighness based on lighting conditions. Also, DEM shading on topo maps (when loaded) is viewable at all zoom levels, unlike the other models which show it only when zoomed in quite close. Overall, the 5000 is much more customizable than most of the nuvi line. _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

Thanks for that gatorguy6996, I hadn't realised it was a Linux OS.
I had a Kenwood built in double din unit - KNA 520 - for 3 years but it got
stolen and I miss it considerably. As I don't intend to buy another fixed
system - I can't afford to keep replacing it - I felt the 5000 would be a
good removable replacement. I hope future experience of the machine
will prove me right in my choice.

One other thing unique to your 5000: You can connect a backup camera to it, giving you one of the features that some built-in's offer. _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

Never looked at the 5000. Could someone tell me the max level you can zoom out and still see ALL surface streets please. Most GPS are only 1/2 mile or less then you loose the small streets. |
