Hi All
Just moved over to Garmin 255wt after using a Tomtom for 5 years and although initially happy I have a couple of questions that are annoying me after a week of use.
Firstly, I have the latest 2009 map pack and its sending me in some strange routes. For example i`d be driving along the A40 near my house in west london and 2 junctions before my exit its diverting me onto smaller A roads which may be shorter distances but have a 30mph speed limit and traffic lights. Is there no way of avoiding these roads and having fast roads as preferences? This is something Tomtom never had a problem with as it always used the faster roads where necessary.
Also, the voice is driving me round the bend in town, saying things like "turn left in 0.1 miles" is there a way to override this so it says in yards or just "turn left" when you are nearer the junction?

For routing, there are two things you can do.
1. Under Tools, Settings, Navigation you can select Faster Time or Shorter Distance. But even so, it picks some odd routings.
2. After you've input your destination and pressed Go, you can then press Menu, Where to etc, and proceed to input a Via Point (eg a major road junction) to force a particular route. Enter multiple Vias if desired.
I don't think there's much that can easily be done about the repeated direction instructions. These are built into the unit.
What I do is have the instructions either completely on or (almost) completely off.
See elsewhere on this forum under Ash10 Voice Utility for how to doctor the Garmin's English voice file to replace the 'Recalculating' instruction with silence, and how to doctor the American voice file to replace all the instructions with silence apart from bings, bongs and items in rare usage.
You can then swith between the two sets of voice files as desired.
ok thanks. Yes did have it set to fastest/quickest mode. I`ve been through all the settings and it still wasnt that great, I had used the via function which did work ok. I guess its just important to check the route before setting off.
You`d think theyd take into account things like traffic lights, junctions, etc in working out the quickest routes. It might be further on a motorway, but 9 out of 10 times it`ll be faster than minor roads.
