Hi,

we're in the market for a new satnav, but need it with maps of Iceland (we currently have a Garmin I3 which I don't think has this map available to update). I have googled for a good few hours with no joy - the closest I have come to it is a free topographical map which isn't quite what we're after. I have also emailed lots of retailers and no luck from them either.

I found a satnav on Ebay which claims to have the required map - however I am always wary of buying unbranded goods from China after a previous bad experience.

Thanks for any information offered!

Mark

The only map(s) for Iceland I can find are HERE (opens in a new window).

Don't know how it works or with what gps system. Others many know some more.

Think you need a Icelandic forum Laughing

Depends what you plan on doing in Iceland? As Iceland only has a few roads there isn't much demand for a road navigation solution but if you plan on venturing off-road you'd need a guide anyway and they'll have GPS?

Open Street Mapping has some Iceland coverage, whilst this is an electronic map nobody has released a navigation device using the map - you can use it on PDA based phones and iPhone but it only shows you where you are on the map, see Here - Mike

Thanks for all the help so far!

We're mainly looking for routable navigation by road - we assume it must be available as most of the car hire rental desks offer these. We thought for the cost of hire we may as well buy a new unit as ours is three years old (garmin I3). True it looks like there are only a few roads in Iceland, but there are a few towns too, and with place names such as Skagafjordur, Kirkjubaejarklaustur or Austur-Bardhastrandarsysla I doubt my missus will be able to keep up with a standard map (I christened our I3 as the 'Marriage Insurance Device')... Not Worthy

I found a topo map which will be useful and I may be able to download it to the etrex - useful for hiking.

The OpenStreetMap looks interesting and the fact you can export the maps. Looks like there are some conversions programs available/being worked on http://www.nabble.com/Routable-Garmin-maps-td17651696.html that potentially makes a Garmin compatible routable map. It seems a lot of effort, and you'd need to use it a few times before feeling comfortable with taking it anywhere you need to depend upon it.

Navtec obviously have the map data for Iceland as their website http://www.uk.map24.com/ has detailed coverage, but I cannot see any of their satnav mapping products listing it Crying or Very sad

Thanks again - any more suggestions gratefully received!!
